The oversized pocket on the right side of the rig in your photo was for the oil bottle. I've seen the bottle in a variety of colors.

My rifle when purchased new in the box came with instruction manuals and the stock mounted cleaning kit.

The toggles on my old one are wood, are they green plastic on yours?View attachment 965135View attachment 965136 View attachment 965137
Those pictures of the instruction manuals look like they were the inspiration for Ruger Manuals. It's been a while since I bought a new ruger, do they still come with those same manuals?

I got a case of that stuff for around $100 right after I graduated high school in 2004.

Packaged in brown paper, 30 rounds per packet and on stripper clips. When I opened up the 550 rd tin made a hiss that would get that Stevemre1989 guy on YouTube tingley. And the green paint from the inside of the spam can was still tacky. Should of bought the other two cases the guy had. But money was hard to come by for then 18 year old me. My Mak90 absolutely loves the stuff so I ration it.

And yes it is very corrosive. If you are one of those AK guys that never clean your AK, and you shoot that stuff and throw your AK in the closet afterwards and forget about for a couple months. You might the assistance of WD40 and a rubber mallet.

Very nice! That stuff must have been sold by the millions. This photo is from '93, the weekend I bought my first Norinco. At that time the rifle came in a styrofoam box with all accessories including ammo pouch, oiler and cleaning kit. I still have an unopened case of the steel core to this day.

If not for AR's, I imagine the SKS would be America's ubiquitous semi auto rifle. It's such a gun and if I really think about it I think I prefer them to AK's. They really are a great rifle and fun to shoot. If not for a 5rd limit for hunting I wonder if they would be more popular ranch/farm/home defense rifles.

More Chi-Com ammo, bought way back when, at $2 a box. The dark green boxed stuff is supposed to be steel core, sometimes referred to as "armor piercing", but I doubt it's that effective.

But there is a collector's market for it and it's somewhat pricey. Some say it's the best steel ammo for SKS's and AK's

There was even soft point.

Eh I shot over a dozen cases of this stuff back in the 90's and still have a few boxes floating around. Definitely is not AP by any stretch. Stinks when shot and it's corrosive. The good part was price. People said it was around for $50 but seems like I always paid closer to $80-90. Mak90 would give me pie plate groups at 50 yards.

Pretty much all of the current manufacture from Tula, Barnaul and Wolf are better ammo. More accurate and not corrosive.

Yep not AP. And from experience shooting Mosins a lot of the surplus 54r were steel core too. I'd find the peeled off jacket and steel core while sifting through the berm behind my target.

To bad your Mak didn't like it. Mine seems to shoot more consistent with Chinese stuff. But had Chinese SKSs that perfered Russian ammo. It probably depends on the gun and ammo batch number.
