Its not a monster, but will be good eating.

Shot with her 270...130 Nosler Ballistic Tip pushed by 54 grains of H4350.

The deer was 345 yards away and quartering away slightly...I told her the drop and wind drift, she did the rest...dropped him with one shot.

I'd say she's off to a great start!

I should add that she's not new to shooting...she's been active in shooting all her life, especially in the last 12 years since we got married...but she started hunting just last year.

She's lethal with that 270 out to about 1/4 of a mile.

Just make sure that I don't do anything to upset her. At my speed of running she would have no problem picking me off.. Good for her, now if I can get my wife to take her first deer I will completely converted her into a redneck girl.

Congratulations to your wife. My freezer is devoid of venison for the time being :(

How do you find the ballistic tips for hunting? Two of my friends have trialed them and have had problems, in .308, with over penetration and lack of expansion in a variety of situations. Being from two different people I started to develop my own loads based on the partition and accubond. It looks like they are doing the job for you, and they are always in stock here in a variety of weights compared to a sparse selection of accubonds and partitions. Sorry for the thread drift, but a cracking shot at 345 yards just begged me to ask.

I've been using Ballistic Tips since the year they were introduced... In 24, 25, 27, 28, and 30 caliber...never had a problem with them.

They're accurate...and the terminal performance is deadly...best deer bullet ever made in my opinion (well over 100 deer to back it up)

Overpenetrate? No such thing...

They almost always exit unless you hit solid bone, even the little 6mm bullets...the bullet that killed my wife's deer exited...after turning the liver and lungs to a gory mush similar to jello that had been run through a blender.

Failed expansion....I'd have to see it to believe it...and even then, I'd have to see it more than once.

Thanks for the feedback.

Edit: I guess over-penetrate relates to lack of expansion. Pass-thru without doing as much damage as expected. I never saw it first hand, but when I mentioned that I wanted to use Nosler pills I was warned off ballistic tips for the same reason from two different people (not LGS employees, but friends who have been into reloading for decades longer than I have) who had used them.

Since I have the option and liked the design of the Partition, it was easy to not look in to it further and take their word for it.

Cheers.

Sweet. Congrats to your wife.

over penetration and lack of expansion in a variety of situations.

That definitely doesn't sound like Nosler BTs. Like Ridgerunner, I've used a lot of them on game and have never one time been disappointed.
Try them for yourself before you form an opinion about them. I doubt very seriously you'll be disappointed either.

My wife killed a deer, an antelope, and a moose, then decided she didn't care for hunting and hasn't been since. Go figure?

The problem with ballistic tips up close is they expand too much, too easily and ruin a lot of meat. At long distance they work as advertised.

Nice! I wish my wife would do the same. AT least my 12 year old girl goes hunting with me.

I noticed you like the H4350. I have been using H4831SC on 150s and was thinking I should step down. I was wondering what the difference is? I took 3 shots last weekend and my ear was hurting. I am just hunting whitetail so I think I am a bit overpowered.

H4350 will give you a little less recoil, a little less muzzle blast, and a little less muzzle velocity...

I use 4350 because its what I have plenty of (8 lbs.)...I keep it on hand because I use it for 243, two 30-06's, and her 270.

It is not exactly perfect for the 270...its just a smidge on the fast side...but it is perfect for 90 grain and up bullets in the 243 and the 168-180 grain bullets in the 30-06.

The velocity loss in 270 is very minimal...not enough to matter...and the accuracy is awesome.

I've never used anything except 130 grain bullets in the 270...no whitetail or mule deer anywhere will survive a well placed shot from a 130 grain 270 bullet...its all you will ever need for deer...and the lighter bullet will further reduce the recoil some...between that and the lighter powder charge you will have a noticeable reduction in recoil.

The 130 is not the most efficient 270 bullet from a ballistics standpoint...but out to about 1/4 of a mile it does just fine.

I have only been loading the 270 on a few runs. I first loaded up the 150s because I was new to reloading and just learning. But I bought em...Loaded a ladder and found some loads that shoot well. It sure takes me a long time to shoot through 100 rounds. I have just been putting them down range to check zero and blast deer. But I am finally ready to change up and step down.

Congrats on her first deer... My wife got her first deer (a big doe) on Nov.26th. Only problem was she used her 2012 Dodge Journey. Actually the deer hit her; plowed into the drivers side. No human injuries and the deer was still alive on the side of the road when the sheriff got there. He had to put it out of its misery. When I congratulated my spouse on her first deer she failed to see the humor.
