having to manually cock the firearm each time is a safety precaution that is built into this particular model. I wonder why would you think that bad?

I don't have any personal experience but I red somewheres on here that sometimes little people have a hard time pulling the cocking knob back.

This is the reason I like. I let my kids load the rifle while keeping the bore down range, but it is up to me to actually cock it. Remeber, they will never at this age be carrying a loaded rifle in the woods. I bought the Chipmunk as a trainer for very small children, children too young to be trusted with a loaded firearem without very close supervision.

I bought my girls the rifles below. They are a little long for a 4 year old; however my oldest was 4 when I took her shooting with it (couldn't buy it for one and not the other). She had to make some hip shots, but she learned the basics of how guns work. They both are very knowledgeable in firearms, and sadly know more than their mother, seeing as how they are almost 5 and 6 now. My 6 year old has taken a liking to my Winchester 9422 as of late.

My kids do extremely well with firearms, and most adults, although usually appalled at first, are actually quite impressed with my kids' behavior around firearms, and their knowledge about them, given their age. I attribute that to the ease of the rifles in which they both have learned on.

These two are Crickett rifles. Yes, they do have to be manually cocked for each round, and they also have a button on the bottom that can lock the bolt open. It's tedious, but teaching kids about gun safety isn't something I'm particularly fond of rushing through. On the same note, it won't be long before they outgrow these and are ready to move on to bigger and better things. These rifles are sturdy enough that I expect they'll last at least long enough for my kids to present them to their grandchildren to learn on.

I considered getting a youth rifle for my 6 year old son, but I ultimately decided against it. I really enjoy shooting (just targeting for me) and I'd like my boy to come with me some times.
I think, though, that the newly mounted scope will help him. I got some rings that are slightly taller -- they appear to be called peep rings. I thought I'd be able to use the open sights too, but after I mounted it I see I was wrong. The sights are too short, oh well. No biggie.
Any way. With the scope raised a little higher than "normal" I don't think he'll have to turn his head nearly sideways to aim:

Get one that fits him and one that he can work the action.

A word of CAUTION - If you get him a chipmunk beware that you will get an accidential discharge if you lift up the bolt handle while it is cocked and loaded!!!

One more vote for the Crickett. Its simple, about as safe as can be and has adjustable peep sights.

My daughter with hers on Christmas day....I buy them a gun each year. First year I started it was the Crickett rifle.....pink for her (with a spare black stock in case she outgrows pink) and black for him.

This year was the second year......they got 1895 Nagant pistols, no pictures yet. Thinking about ordering them some M44 Mosins in the near future.
