I inherited a North American Arms 5 shot derringer with 1 1/8" barrel. The frame is stamped 22 Mag but I don't' know if the cylinder has been changed out to .22LR or not.
Is there any way to tell? Both .22LR and .22Mag fit in the cylinder.
TIA

If a 22 Magnum Rimfire cartridge will fit in the chamber, it is NOT chambered for the 22 Long Rifle. The 22 LR may drop into place in the Magnum chamber but it certainly does not fit.

Remove the cylinder, and look at the end. You should see an "M" for a magnum cylinder and an "LR" for a long rifle cylinder. Atleast that is how mine is marked.

As posted, if the .22 Mag cartridge fits, it's a .22 Mag. The .22 Mag cartridge will not go in a .22 LR cylinder.

The answers you got are correct. Mine is about 25 years old - it's still a fine little gun. Am considering putting a boot grip on it:

It is VERY simple: If a Mag will fit, it IS a Mag cylinder.
That tells it right there.
