having it's origins in "hillbilly moonshiners outrunning cops"*
Don't forget the Bama boys runnin' shine as well. Sooner or later these guys had to see who was the best. What better way than a Saturday race? Ever see Greased Lightning, or Thunder Road? Great movies.

Now what did this have to do with guns? Oh yea, the NRA sponsored race. I think it is great advertising. :)

Well, NASCAR matched it's highest ticket sales and viewers in the 2011/2012 season and is considered by many the most popular sport in the country.

Maybe not if you live in the cities but where I come from it is very popular and I am in Maine.

I have not watched many races, but I will start. I want to support them.

We were shooting with the grand kids Sunday. Both girls 7 and 6 were anxious to get the 22's cleaned so they could watch the race.

NASCAR is definitely mainstream and "American" with a huge following. I really do think NRA did some careful research before deciding to sponsor NASCAR.

Also, are you aware of the latest NASCAR happening?

Danica Patrick
is drawing even more female fans (adult and children) to NASCAR and the PR/education campaign by NRA could make NRA/Second Amendment synonymous with NASCAR/American pasttime.

Can you picture tens of millions of current/future voters exposed to NRA/2A related backgrounds and certainly NRA/2A related commercials viewed during the race to provoke "awareness" of the US Constitution/Bill of Rights/Self Defense/Sporting use of firearms LIKE enjoying cars and auto racing! I can just imagine the liberals/antis going, "Noooooooooooooo!" in agony as desensitization and popularity increase for NASCAR/NRA. :D

I think it's a well calculated move by the NRA! Great job!

Some of you guys sure are funny, in a good way.

I think this will only help the NRA's image and exposure to the public. Bully for them.

That's great news. Think of all the potential voters out of the NASCAR fan pool. They have a much bigger audience than even football and while I'm sure many/most of them support the Second Amendment, how many of them actually vote and pay attention to who they're voting for?

Ryan, awesome point.

This is for publicity? Who doesn't already know and have an opinion of the NRA?
I would think that NRA funds should go where they say they will go when they ask for your donation. That is to fight bad gun laws and attempts at gun control.

NRA has about as much business sponsoring NASCAR as the Post office did when they sponsored Vance Armstrong's bicycle racing team. Zero.

This is purely my opinion and you are certainly entitled to yours.

Think about this before opposing the NASCAR sponsorship.

How much increase in NRA membership/donation do you think the NASCAR sponsorship will bring in? This is not just a PR/awareness stunt but a deliberate membership/donation drive on a national/world-wide scale/viewership.

NRA has been preparing and fighting a war ... this is part of building that war chest. ;)

Not much.

According to the study, nationwide NASCAR fans can be described as predominately males (78%), married (73%), with an average age of 42 years, who owns a home (81%), with 3.4 cars per household. The median household income range is between $35,000 and $50,000 and almost all are employed full time (87%)

Not much.
Hmmm...see, that's one thing I think I have to concede. I still find it absurd that they do direct mailing junk mail begging donations. That shouldn't work. It SHOULD be a ridiculous waste of money. But it draws in the cash like nothing else does! Boggles the mind, but it works.

This will likely turn out the same way. Doesn't make much sense on the face of it, but they'll likely see very sizable returns on this investment.

You can be utterly sure they devoted a great deal of study to producing a business model for this move and they've got the projected numbers to support their decision.

The mind wobbles, but they'll reap huge membership and donation increases I've no doubt.

I just wonder how much NASCAR fans will have to put in the plate so to speak. That's nothing against them, it's just looking at earning numbers and potential ROI.

But perhaps NRA has access to that full report (which is apparently around 100 pages) and has better marketing data that makes the idea favorable.

BINGO. NASCAR has done a lot as far as appealing to multiple demographics is concerned, more so than the NRA until they recently partnered with Colion Noir. This is the NRA's way of piggybacking on NASCARS longer-fought efforts, and I see how it could pay off big.

NASCAR isn't just rednecks anymore.

That said, there's still a LOT of us :D. I've heard plenty of complaints about America having 80 million gun owners but only 4 and a fraction million NRA members.... so how many gun owning NASCAR fans you reckon the NRA could reach with a well targeted membership drive?

You watch... this works, there's gonna be NRA sponsored WWE cage matches next... :neener:

They should have sponsored Formula One. That would have turned some heads.

This is for publicity? Who doesn't already know and have an opinion of the NRA?

Sure, maybe on THR but Nascar reaches a lot of people who do know about the NRA or our ongoing fight to protect our rights.

FYI.... just about everyone I know owns a gun and shoots. None of them (Including the 50+ at my gun club have ever even heard of this web site, and half of them were not NRA members before this most recent battle)

So don't assume what people know, you may be surprised.

probably not the best use of NRA funds
Well, it did make Piers' head explode and cause him to launch into another babbling tirade.
As Martha Stewart says; "that's a good thing"!

I'll have to make a special effort to watch the race, if for no other reason, just to PO Piers...

Jest curious how long CNN can stick with this clown due to his abysmal ratings?

If you just stop watchin' maybe he'll vanish,Blur!
Believe me - the only reason I DVR him (and the folks on MSNBC / CNN) is to see what the other side is up to.
(Keep your friends close, your enemies closer)

You never know how many clueless folks out there might actually believe his babbling - it was heartening when I saw the video clip of him interviewing Jesse Ventura (not that I'm any Ventura fan). Piers was tossing his usual word salad (just a bunch of far left gun talking points that make no sense) and Ventura was simply using common sense and some factual information.

At the end of the interview, Jesse looked out to the audience and asked "how many people here think I made crackpot points"? (one person clapped).
He then asked "how many people here think I made sensible points"? (sounded like the entire audience clapped).

(crowd reaction at the 4 minute mark)

You know that just had to PO Piers - we can only hope his audience every night has the same reaction and gives Piers' opinion the time it deserves.

Mebbe that's one reason his ratings are so low - here's hoping they keep sinking until he's on a boat back to merry old England so he can worship the monarchy he's so enamored with up close and personal.

BTW - Rachael Madcow tonight continues to compare guns to tobacco - I just love these false dichotomies the loony left continues to regurgitate.
