Shot one of these and I loved it. I don't want one for a collectors piece so I don't see the need to spend 500$ on one (although I think they are the bee's knees). I just like the action and feel/weight.

Is there an alternative big heavy wooden stock .22 bolt action that anyone can recommend? Maybe something I could put a Mauser stock on?

Norinco made the Tu KKW trainers, which are usually cheap. There are .22 adapted Israeli K98ks kicking around, the Polish Wz-48 is fairly cheap, and when all else fails, you could try to find an Erma EL-24 subcaliber tube.

Not exactly what you requested... but CZ makes a great bolt action .22 with long range military style sights in a few configurations. Long range shooting, matching hits with a centerfire out to 175 yards. If they made one with a military Mauser style stock I'd almost have to come up with the money to obtain one!

The wz-48 I had was heavier (or at least felt heavier) than my 91/30.

Just sold mine for $150.
