Ran across this today on the NCWRC site They are looking to open more area

https://ncpaws.org/PAWS/WRC/PublicComments/PublicEntry/PublicComments.aspx

H8. Allow individuals who possess a valid concealed handgun permit to carry that handgun
on wildlife conservation areas, boating access areas, fishing access areas and game lands, except for these game lands (and any boating or fishing access areas on them) which are exempted at the request of the landowner: Buckhorn, Harris, Sutton Lake, Mayo,
Hyco, Lee, Chatham, Pee Dee River north of U.S. 74, Butner-Falls, Jordan, Vance, Kerr
Scott, Dupont, Bladen Lakes and that portion of R. Wayne Bailey-Caswell that is north of
U.S. 158 and east of N.C. 119. Also, allow hunters who possess a valid concealed
handgun permit to carry that handgun while dog training and during the deer
archery and muzzleloader seasons on both public and private lands.

These are proposed chages up for next year that they are looking for comments on.

I'm in NC - I'm just surprised to see this because I had no idea those areas were off limits for CCW. Seems like I can't step out my front door without breaking some law I never knew about.

Yeah, I figured that out awhile back myself. Welcome to another episode of "Waking up to NC's Restrictive Gun Laws."

I'm also glad I found groups like Grass Roots NC to support. :)

:)

Well this along with the other laws passed this year are a good sign, lets keep the ball rolling. I will admit this has as much to do with game law as anything else and NC game law seems to me to be way overly complex. Not to offend but how could you not understand the Laws as writen, I was not suprised at any of the off limits areas. Not saying they could not be a little less restrictive, but really what off limit area do you feel are unreasonable? OK the bit about parks was a little unclear but that should be taken care of with the new laws passed this year.

Sorry if I am misreading your question. Regarding game lands, boat access ramps, fish hatcheries...NONE. I feel my right to carry trumps any concerns in those areas.

  • Loaded firearms are prohibited at all N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission public access areas (boat ramps) and public fishing areas.
  • It is also unlawful to possess a loaded firearm within a posted restricted zone of any state-owned fish hatchery.
  • In counties where shining a light at deer is not prohibited, it is always unlawful to be in possession of any firearm, including a concealed firearm with permit, while shining a light in search of deer.

I feel all of those are completely unreasonable. :)

Agreed I do think NC game laws are odd to begin with and in some cases like you noted over step there place.

Yes, they are. I get a little fired up over them because it reads to me like NC Wildlife views potential poaching threats (if you can call legal handgun permit holders poaching threats) as being more important than my right to carry for self defense. :)

I understand the laws I read - it's the ones I don't know about that are tripping me up. I'm not stupid, just ignorant. And a bit lucky I guess.
