Two shot in attempted carjacking; suspect dies

1/13/2003 11:16 AM
By: Associated Press

Police in Charlotte say a struggle during an attempted carjacking ended in a deadly shooting early yesterday in which the alleged suspect died.

Police say a father and son were returning to Concord and taking
a shortcut home when they became targets.

It's believed the suspect jumped into their car as the two were
returning from a concert and that the 16-year-old son was driving
as his father wrestled with the gunman.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Captain Dale Greene says the father was shot in the abdomen, but wrestled the gun away from the suspect and shot him.

The suspect walked to a nearby house where paramedics were
called. However, he was pronounced dead a few hours later at the
hospital.

Martin Barnes is in fair condition at Carolinas Medical Center. It's up to the district attorney to decide if any charges will be filed.

Gunman jumps into car, shoots passenger, who wrestles the gun away from him, shoots the gunman fatally, and now the DA is puzzling out whether to press charges? Can a dead person be indicted...?

Actually, I think the reporter was just checking off an item on the "how to write up a gun death" reporter's guidebook.
