On the last episode of Season 2, the bad guy was said to have used a setup called a "Kate". What setup was that? I missed it.. I'm sure someone will know..

Question Part 2: Is it really called a "Kate"?

I think that's the answer. Never heard it called "Kate" before - he named his setup.

Actually they were referring to the M-40 in that episode, since Gibbs is supposed to be a former Marine sniper. I'm pretty sure I remember him calling the the M-40 at some point during that conversation actually.

The best blunder was claiming the bullets were moly coated! Then bullets all looked like naked boolets to me!

The gun that Gibbs would of used would not have been a M24 because that is the Army's Sniper rifle. Gibbs is a MARINE, therefore his gun is a M-40. Hopefully somebody TIVO'ed it to answer this question, but what I got out of the episode was that the specific load that the sniper used is Designated a KATE.

Handloaded ammunition using:

Lapau Brass
165 grain Moly Coated .308 Boat tailed bullets.

This could just be Hollywood taking liberty with its writing, but I have a feeling that this has some fac behind somewhere. Are there any former or current MARINE snipers here that can answer this for the less informed?

Gibbs says that the Bravo-51 Rifle is called a "Kate". He also says this in the Episode 2 of this season when talking to Ziva about why he knows that Ari is responsible.

the rifle marines call a "Kate" is a Tac-Ops Bravo 51, which was indeed Ari's weapon. Gibbs' rifle was a m40-A1. The show is so accurate because the producer is an ex-marine, and they have a real NCIS special agent on set during the making of every episode.

Supposedly the name KATE came from the nickname of the issue m24 that was issued to the Army National Guard shooter who now runs the Sniper Central web site. He ordered a Bravo 51 and named it KATE II. So the tv guys just grabbed a little info or dis-info here and there.
Just like I called my issue M-21 rifle Old Hammer and now I tend to call my personal M1A the same thing....

there's no such thing as an "ex-Marine"

Im actually surprised at how much they got right on that show...Lapua Brass, etc

And some real groaners are wrong -- Abby test firing a recovered Glock 17 and saying the bullets from the SIG matched two previous murders.

Critique it to death, it's still one of the best (watchable) shows on TV. I can't take CSI in any form (but Miami is particularly hard to watch), but NCIS is sweet relief, although sometimes I want to smack Gibbs in the back of the head and see if he likes it.......

That must explain the suicide girl working in the lab ;)

A buddy of mine prefers to call himself a "recovering Marine" (also ;))

It isn't bad. Hollywood is never going to get it 100% (or even 90%) right but NCIS is pretty watchable TV.
