Looks like the boxes I was buying in the early 90's, but they weren't that cheap....I believe the Ballistic Tip came out in the mid 80's.

I'm sure you're right. I was guessing at the age based on the price. Maybe they were on sale, but still pretty cheap.

Nosler 130 gr Ballistic tips are $21.49 for a box of 50 on Midway. Are they the same bullets as my old box or have they changed or tweaked them?

I have read that Nosler Ballistics Tip design has changed. When and how I don’t recall. You could call Nosler and get the definitive answer directly from them. Let us know if you do

I got 5 same kind of box but are 308/165 in a trade a longgg time a go (mid 90's). No price on them. 4 unopen 1 I open to check them out.
going to load some up someday, for the M1

Pretty cool Fred Meyer was one of the stores I shopped growing up in Oregon. Before Kroger bought the chain

I still have a bunch of them also but they are not as old as the Lee Q Loaders, Mine are priced at $12.10 a box, and are also from the early 1990s. The solid base was my favorite hunting bullet back then for deer, then I moved on to the partitions and still use them.

The box on the bottom of the pic is the same as the ops. The two solid base bullet boxes above it are shortly after the ballistic tip came out.
The partition bullets were much more expensive than the solid base were, marked at $18.00/100.
The op's go way back at $5.69.

The Solid Based bullet was introduced in 1972...
The Ballistic Tip bullet was introduced in 1984...

I was just starting to learn how to reload in 1972 and Dad always used Sierra.

The Winchester silver tips in the picture had just came out when I bought these and disappeared off the market shortly after I bought several boxes of them. I haven't seen them since.

These are all full and unopened except for the Hornadys.
I never got around to using them.

The older Ballistic Tips where more fragile. would sometimes fail (act like a varmint bullet) with to high a velocity at impact.

I would think those would be fine for a 7x57 at 200 yards. Maybe not for a 7mm Weatherby at 50.

See if Nosler can identify the year of manufacturer and give you a recommended maximum impact speed.

I shot quite a few mule deer at ranges of 8 to 160 yards with a 7mm Mauser using the "new" 140 gr Ballistictips (50 rounds to a box) with >18" of penetration very sucessfully.

I found a box of 100 (old) bullets and with the same load (2850 fps) the bullet blew up in the first 4" of penetration leaving a softball sized hole at ~ 35 yards.

Happened twice before I noticed the difference between the 50 (new) and 100 (old) pack.

I emailed Nosler about the bullets in the above pictures and asked if they are different from currently made ballistic tips, here's the response:

Yes those are as they are today and the current data is still good to use with them.

Thank you

I have couple boxes when they changed from solid base to BT and I had problems with 6mm 95gr BT, . I call and they asked me to ship them back after I gave them run # and they replace them, but I had to pay for shipping.

I have Nosler manual # 1 (1976) and they only made partitions for 264,270,7mm,338 and 30 cal was partition except for 150gr/168gr HPBT match bullet. 22 cal was solid base BT Spitzer or HPBT, 6mm was same as 22 cal except had 85gr,95gr 100 Partition.
