Just put a very nice 1076 in layaway. Before I get it out I need to have some ammo ready. Already have cast and plated 180g bullets. Need some powder suggestions. I already have power pistol, AA#5. unique, and hs-6. Also some faster powders such as bullseye. How about some powder recommendations from our 10mm experts.

I have several manuels and have been reloading several calibers for about 25 years. Just thought i would see what some experienced 10mm reloaders are using.

AA#9 - some awesome almost 1500fps load for 135'ers.... Charge close to 13 grains. hee hee hee - CHA-BOOOOM! lots of fanfare and muzzle flash.

Thanks PowderMonkey. Been Looking for an excuse to try some #9. I'll give it a try.

I have used AA7 and Blue dot with very good results. The Hornady 7th edition has some loads that's for AA7 that are much higher than other references and the Hornady 8th. I used them and got away with it but I think more on luck. I really like the Blue Dot on the 180's. I was using AA7 on 155's and it works well.

Plinkers: WSF
Hunting: Longshot

That's all there is to it. #9 is alright but takes way too much powder to meet ballistics of others. Blue Dot doesn't meter as well as WSF or Longshot. WSF is similar in burn rate to Unique, but meters better. I tried every powder suitable for the 10mm and have settled on WSF and Longshot as my two powder battery.

I used Autocomp , Power Pistol & Blue Dot in 10mm.
Autocomp at a start charge for a 135 Gr bullet got me a Velocity of around 1,240 out of a Glock 29.

Blue Dot is way to loud for me but I have to admit that the recoil from Power Pistol in that tiny gun was killing my hand. Nearly flipped out of my hand! Need to work on the grip.

Anyways, I just started reloading 10mm as well and I would recommend AutoComp if you be willing to try it. I have only used it for 135 Gr. As for Power Pistol, It provided very good accuracy results at around 7-9 yards. I had used 155 Gr, 165 and 180 Gr bullets with that.

Hope this helps any.

Remington Nickled brass,Fed 150 LP primer &
12.0gr of AA#7 behind a Speer 180gr Gold Dot HP seated to 1.250OAL.
Will run @1300fps out of a 5" S&W slide gun.

Combat Tupperware (Glocks)will malfunction with the above load.

I haven't shot any cast or plated through my 10. For jacketed however I use AA #5 for the light weights up to 150grs, then switch over to #7 for loads up to 175grs and then go with #9 for everything heavier.

I just found that the AA powders were more accurate with my pistol, the downside is that they co change from time to time so when you get a new lot you need to load a few short of your normal load and check it for velocity.

I usually purchase at least two 1# bottles of the same lot each time so I don't have to mess with it as often. Doing this allows me at least 1K rounds before I need to retest.

I use Blue Dot in my 1076. Originally tried 700X, but blew out a case with a max load. Slower powders are much more forgiving.

I just loaded 1000 rds. of 180gr fmj, using AA#5. I prefer #7, but wasn't interested in more velocity, as these are just plinkers.

AA7 is good. Blue Dot for 180 grn lead loads. Longshot for good blasters. 800x for nuclear loads. Unique and SR4756 for plinkers.

I am currently loading Blue Dot loads with 180 grn lead TCFP's. I won't quote the exact load but its a good blasting load.

10mm is one of those really easy rounds to load for. Very few bad combinations out there IF you avoid fast powders (like Bullseye, 231, red dot). Stay in the mediums to slows (AA9 etc) and you are going to be hard pressed to find a really bad load.

As Speer Lists 12gr of AA # 7 as Max with a Velocity of 1180 fps out of a 5 incher, I think your Chrony may have isues or you are very optomistic with your velocity guestemates .

HS-6

I love 8.4gr of HS-6 Under a 180gr projectile. It will net you about 1040fps but is very very accurate. I use this load because of it's accuracy and it will not beat up the old still new looking 1076 which stopped being made a long time ago. I want to ensure I get the chance to enjoy it for the rest of my life. So leave those hot bluedot loads for the S&W 610 :) plus you mention plated bullets they aren't supposed to be pushed as fast as jacketed anyway.

By the way it is 180gr plated bullets I use, and this load came out of the latest sierra manual.

Not to start a glock bash here but mine handles this fine. Glock 20 with the factory bbl or my aftermarket. I will say this probably my first and last Glock though.

Not arguing about what seems to be an overpressured load, but what is the nature of the Glock failure that you experienced with that load? Sounds like horsehockey to me!!

9gr power pistol, berry 180gr flat nose. It's a fun load. Need to load some with aa5 one of these days.

If you don't need "10mm on steroid" type loads, take a look at Ramshot Silhouette. It is treated for flash and will have lower muzzleblast with its top-end loads. It'll take you from medium to factory level 10mm loads and burns a little cooler than most. It is also clean burning. www.ramshot.com ;)

I have a thick folder for the 10mm, probably about 100 or more chronographed loads. Looking back, Blue Dot and Power Pistol simply don't deliver the numbers that other powders do and AA #9 needs heavier powder weights than other powders to get the same velocities. These tests included both 4.6" and 6.0" barrels, large pistol and large pistol magnum primers depending on the powder and bullet weights.

AA #7 is a good all round powder for the 10mm, as are 800X and Longshot. If you do an internet search, you can find Mike McNett's (Double Tap Ammunition) 10mm AA #7 and Longshot load data. :) I've found his handload data to be accurate, and his Longshot data was pressure tested to be under 37,500psi.

For 44 magnum performance from your 10mm, I recommend using Power Pistol. A max load of Power Pistol will make you a firm believer. I've used Blue Dot and AA#9 and they work well, but Power Pistol has the most giddy up for my dollar. Blue Dot is interesting in that you will get a "blue" flame from the barrel. Can't address AA#7 but I'm sure it would work well. If you don't reload, McNett's Double Tap 10mm ammo is the best that can be had. I keep a magazine loaded in the house with double tap because it is the best and most reliable. My 2 cents, of course. Good Shooting!!!

Thanks for the suggestions. Just picked up the 1076 yesterday. I'll need to fire some factory ammo so I can have a supply of brass. I'll report back when I start useing my own loads.

800X, Longshot, Power Pistol, BD, and ditto what readyeddy said.

I just loaded/shot some today. 7.7gr AA#5 with a 180gr fmj flat nose. Accurate enough for range work and not bad on recoil.
