Folks here are very helpful - and I need some advice.

I pre-ordered an IWB holster for a 1911 I don't yet have. It's time to decide the size of 1911 and pay...

So I have several full size 1911s, but think that's just too big to carry. I'm shopping for either a 3" or 4" 1911. But I may not buy one for awhile and the holster will take a couple months yet to deliver. I don't need it immediately and have plenty of other options for IWB carry.

Anyway, should I order the holster for a 4" so that it may fit any 4" or 3" 1911 I may find in the future? Or just order it for the 3"?

Depends on the holster brand do they have a slide version? A slide is made open at the bottom slightly longer than a 3 inch and the longer sizes will fit to, they just stick out the bottom. For an example check out Comp Tacs website and look at the 1911 version of the slide for a Minotaur holster. Other than that a 3 should fit in a 4 inch holster to.

I think you will be happier, in the long run, if you order the holster to match the barrel/slide length.

I don't think this type would work well as an IWB. If the muzzle protrudes through the holster, it would surely catch on one's clothing, as well as staining it with gun lube. Milt Sparks did make this type at one time (MMX) but I don't believe it is catalogued now.
