I am trying to find a load for plinking.....I tried 5.6 gains of w-231 with a platted bullet from Xtreme 200 gain RN. Still getting powder blast in my face I did put a little tighter crimp on them (thinking it might help with the blast). But I am also getting some that keyhole at 10yrds. My OAL is 1.19. Can someone point me in the right direction.

I don't think more crimp will help you. I only taper crimp just enough to remove the bell. My crimps usually measure .471-.472". Some people say they get alot of powder blast off of W231, but I have never had that problem. I load 230gr RN XTream plated over 5.0 gr of W231 with a OAL of 1.260", and Winchester LPP. This works very well in my SA1911. I also load 230gr lead RN over 4.8gr of W231 with a OAL of 1.235", and CCI LPP. I have noticed some unburnt powder in my face with this lead load, but not much. I may get blasted 1 out of every 200 rnds or so.

If you are getting unburnt powder blast, I don't think you are getting high enough chamber pressures for consistent powder burn. X-Treme bullets have fairly thick plating and I usually use jacketed load data for them with good results. I would try increasing the powder charge

Hodgdon's current load data:
200 gr CAST LSWC W231/HP-38 OAL 1.225" Start 4.4 gr (771 fps) 11,000 CUP - Max 5.6 gr (914 fps) 16,900 CUP

200 gr Speer JHP W231/HP-38 OAL 1.155" Start 5.2 gr (794 fps) 12,700 CUP - Max 5.9 gr (906 fps) 16,700 CUP

1999 Winchester load data

Ditto on WST.

I like 4.8gr WST with 200gr SWC, OAL of 1.245 and crimp of .4695-.470. Works very well in my Kimbers, with little unburnt powder.

I have been using a light load (5.5gr) of Unique for many years with almost every 230gr bullet with great results.

I am using 5.8 gr. 231 under a 200 gr Berrys flat point. They are giving me absolutely no issues in my Ed Brown commander, Kimber 3" CDP, or my XDm. Light taper crimp. Very accurate load for me.
