Well, I got some good side by side comparisons of my SWFA Super Sniper 6x scope vs my Nikon P-223 3-9x40. It comes as no surprise that the SWFA scope is better, but it is becoming more and more apparent that the Nikon just won't cut it in the long term for my coyote rifle (RRA LAR-15 middy).

I had thought of a 1-4x scope but, at least theoretically, I'm not happy with the upper end of 4x. I'm thinking a 1-6x scope would be nice. Can anyone recommend a 1-6x scope under $500?

It depends on your rifle, but a Leupold 3-9 is always a great choice. I like the higher power for long shots, and the 3x is great for calling in close quarters. Out here in the west, we get a lot of opportunities at 400 yards or so. There are a lot of hay fields that provide longer range shots. The 9x works there. Every Leupold that I have owned is very good at low light conditions.

Vortex has the new Strike Eagle 1-6x24. it has a CQB plus BDC type reticle. MSRP is $429 so when it hits the streets it should be a little lower. I have a feeling these will sell like hot cakes. it will probably end up being the #1 choice for most on a budget, especially for those that prefer or like a BDC reticle. that is my prediction.

I was just looking at the Vortex Strike Eagle on SWFA for $349 with scope mount. Definitely a good looking scope and one that I'll be looking into a little more.

I just ordered a Zeiss 3-9x40 from Euro Optics. $329. Won't get it until Wednesday, but I can't imagine that anything from Zeiss will be less than extremely impressive.

I know a lot of members here like Nikon, but I've had three and was not impressed. Maybe they're better now, but I have a real hard time believing they'll top European glass.

I had a 4x fixed power scope on my shotgun. After about 10 years the 4x scope expired. I put a 2-7x32 Nikon prostaff on the shotgun. I set the 2-7x32 on 5x to sight in the shotgun. I haven't had a need to adjust the magnification since. I used a B34 pistol target to sight in the Nikon. I have shot deer out to 125 yards with the shotgun. I have had opportunities to shoot deer at further distances but I passed. The deer were 2 jumps from a jungle. I am not going to try to find a deer in that situation so they got a free pass. The Hornady SST sabots have a range of 200 yards. On paper it says you can shoot deer further. That piece of paper has never found a deer.
