I am going to enlist in the Air force this year and when I am in it I want a good inexpensive hand gun to register on base for range use and maybe ccw depending on where they would station me at and if my ccw permit is valid where I would be at off base I know I am not allowed to carry on base and that it needs to be unloaded and in the trunk when checking back in and out so that is not an issue and will be followed.

I am leaving my expensive handguns and shotguns at home with my parents in a safe because of all the horror stories on how the armory people on base handle personal guns.So I want to at least bring in and register an inexpensive handgun and maybe a shotgun for range and miscellaneous use when I am stationed for however many years I stay with them.

What are your recommendations on what would be a good inexpensive handgun for that purpose that I wont worry about getting scratched or nicked by armory people?

Stainless Ruger standard.

You can't hurt one if you run over it with an airforce tug tractor.

Depends on what you consider inexpensive? I would look used glock and mossberg shotgun. You'll be good to go. If you go too cheap you wont like what you get.

You may find a used glock for 300 but I doubt it. I would look ruger as suggested earlier. The P series is a solid gun - reliable and accurate, just a bit big for cc though.

Ruger P95
Taurus PT92/99 (too big for CCW but a good range gun)
Any other Ruger P Series (same as above)
S&W Sigma

Remember to shop used and shop classifieds, both will save you some dough.

CZ-82 - just about my least expensive..but most accurate and best feeling gun I own. $180 a lot of places online.

Boy have I got a deal for you. Coles distributing is selling a bunch of 3rd gen SW 5904's for $238 each on Gunbroker. They seem to be LEO tradeins. I got one two weeks ago and the internals show no wear at all, none. The department armorer or SW seems to have parkerized the slide. There is some holster wear on the aluminum frame but it doesn't appear to have been fired except for the factory test-fire. I have put several hundred rounds through it and it shoots exceptionally well. The SW 3rd generation pistols have an excellent reputation ( I own seven) and this one is no exception, especially at a great price. It also is DA/SA and has the decocker/safety lever on the slide which may fit in with the M9 you will train with in the military. Take a look.

Ruger P series. Best you'll get in a semi-auto for that much. S&W 64 trade in will get you an excellent revolver in that price range. Good luck, hope your service goes well & safely.

Thanks Oldandslow and everyone that gave their input.
That is definitely a good deal will look into that as soon as I get enough money and get with Big Tims pawn shop in my area that does $20 transfers for up to 5 guns which is the best deal in my area so it would come out to around $280 including the shipping which is better then what local gun shops would sell them for.

Most bases don't give you any problems with your guns-except maybe newbie enlisted. Some I have been stationed at had very good ranges available to base personnel.

Your from Fla. At Hurlburt in Ft Walton Beach, the range was great and lots of places to shoot in "Lower Alabama"..;)

What career field are you trying to get into? That'll narrow "where you'll be.

If you go to basic in San Antonio, I'd be glad to steer you to the good local ranges.

A stainless steel Tuarus Model 85 5 shot .39 special revolver can be had new for about $300.00. I've owned several and always been pleased with them. They conceal easily in an Uncle Mike's Inside-The-Pocket holster so they are exceptionally easy to CCW.

Some folks hate the Smith and Wesson Sigma SW9V (9mm) or SW40V, but I have had many of them and never had an issue with any aspect of them. $300 new at Academy Sports, www.Academy.com

Don't bet your life on junk guns like Lorcins or Jennings.

Thanks for the heads up Oldandslow! $209 buy it now, yowza, i gotta look around and find something I never use to throw on ebay or something, geez.

Go ahead and spend about 450.00 for an american classic 1911 .45....Great shooting pistol and not high enough your scared of scratching it up. All the aftermarket parts available are a plus like most 1911's then when you get back in a more controlled environment you get her reblued if needed and you still got a jam up cheep 1911.

I personally don't care for the triggers in the P-series, but I can't argue with their reliability.

If it was me, I would cruise the pawn shops for a used G-17 or G-19.

And a used Remington 870 or Mossberg 500, depending on your preference. (I prefer Remington.) Modify as necessary.

I'd look for a used or LE trade-in S&W 9mm, like a 908, 915, etc. $300, high quality, run forever.

Just wanted to say Thanks for your service young man....oh and I'd look for a third generation Smith, seems like quite a few are coming into the market now.
