So after years of hand priming without a problem, my lee hand primer broke. So I'm looking for a new one and the new square lee doesn't look that great - anyone have any thoughts on this

The RCBS one with the universal head. Doesn't need shell holders.

RCBS standard.

You already have shell holders for your press that fit it.

I've been using the same one since 1970.

And it works as good today as the day I bought it.

I've been using an RCBS priming die for many years. I love it cause once I adjust the die, I can load with very little concern as to how deep I'm seating them. It's a very consistent priming system IMO, and I haven't ever experienced a mis-fire in 30+ years.

FYI, I can prime 6-8 per minute, maybe a bit more once I get a rhythm going.

Plenty of the Lee circular ones on ebay. I hand prime everything but 9mm, and I load approx 20 different calibers. It me case prep and priming is one of the most important things in reloading, and I was taught by hand so that's what I do. Even for my AR rounds, seems dumb form me to hand prime them just to blow through a magazine, but I'm stuck in my ways at a young age. Hahahahahah

I also like the RCBS standard primer. I switched over from a Lee and I was very happy I did. The RCBS is so much easier on the hands and works extremely well.

Theres mixed reviews on the newer model Lee. And as you probably know Lee doesn't have parts for the older style. I dont remember the exact terms of Lees warranty but I remember something that of they cant fix their dies, or out of initial warranty, they'll replace at 50% of new value. Something like that, perhaps its the same on this tool?
You might find a used one on here or EBay etc and cannibalize the parts.

I almost faced the same situation, my choices narrowed to Lee or RCBS

My 'round top' lee tool wore out a couple years ago. It either wore or somehow flexed to where it wouldn't fully seat a primer. I replaced it with the 'square top' lee tool and it's OK. The feel is different than the older tool. I don't know if it broke in or I just got used to it, because it feels better than it did when new (First time I used it, I thought it was awful). Other than that, the lid doesn't fit as tight (flush) as it should and sometimes a primer will get lodged on the high step that separates the bulk of the primers from the ones near the seating area. I already had every case holder made for the tool and I guess that was my reason for buying another lee.

I recently bought an RCBS APS hand primer tool just in case all I can find is APS primers. I'm really liking it. I may get the bench tool some day. If I ever get the urge for another progressive, I may seriously consider the Pro2000 just for the APS system. I also have a pair of RCBS universals, one for large and one for small. I'm lazy like that.

Another long time RCBS hand primer user. Started with the old Lee hand primer.

I currently use the Hornady hand primer tool and I have also used the RCBS. Between the two, I liked the RCBS better and will buy it when I need another one.
