Hello THR,

A good friend is currently undergoing the hardest physical training the Navy has to offer and he needs a better sharpener for his knife.
I am very proud of him and want to help out anyway I can.

He specifically asked me to help him find a "hand held knife sharpener for his 1095".

He doesn't have much time after "work" and needs to get as much sleep as possible so a quick system is better.

I have a lansky croc stick that works okay and is pretty small.

Any other Suggestions?

Thanks!

You may want to try the Work Sharp Knife & Tool Sharpener, it is equipped with a fine and course diamond impregnated sharpening area (replaceable) and a round ceramic finisher plus a leather area for removing any remaining burrs from the edge. I found mine at Bass Pro Shop but feel sure other places have them, priced around $32.00. I found the replacement diamond from Darex LLC, P.O.Box 730, 210 E. Hersey St., Ashland, OR 97520.
I have found this to be one of the best designed and easiest to use if you are already able to sharpen a knife, GOOGLE is your friend, take a look at it.

Thanks, but I don't think it can be an electric sharpener.

He is looking for a stone, or a croc system.
Pretty sure it has to fit in his footlocker with all of his other junk.

Work Sharp now makes a couple of manual sharpeners, but I was thinking of their electric sharpeners at first too.

As noted above, Work Sharp Knife and Tool makes several sharpeners, and they're best known for their standard household outlet electric powered models. Links to specific models help to avoid confusion. It seems the model to which you're referring is the Guided Field Sharpener - http://www.worksharptools.com/sharpeners-36/manual-sharpeners/guided-field-sharpener.html.

I generally recommend DMT diamond sharpeners because they're a very high quality US made product. 1095 steel isn't particularly difficult to sharpen, so a good diamond sharpener should make quick work of it. DMT's diafold line is nice because the handle folds around the sharpening media to make an integral plastic case. The dual sided coarse / fine should be all he needs for maintaining a field working edge - https://www.amazon.com/DMT-FWFC-Double-Diafold-Sharpener/dp/B00004WFTW?th=1

This isn't electric, all hand held and man powered may be 6" or 7" long. "Guided Field Sharpener" the portable knife & tool sharpener with built-in angle guides.

DMT also makes a a guide system that attaches to the diafold with a magnet, so that's an option if he wants help maintaining a constant angle while fatigued. They sell just the guide, or you can get it as a kit in a hard case with a pair of dual sided diafolds - https://www.amazon.com/DMT-MAGKIT-4-Diafold-Magna-Guide-Case/dp/B00HZ3SCEQ/. They also sell a similar, but smaller, kit that breaks down into a little zippered pouch, and that might be just the ticket for throwing into his ruck or footlocker - https://www.amazon.com/DMT-AKEFCX-Aligner-Diamond-Sharpening/dp/B00004WFUV/ . He could use the "stones" from either kit free hand for quick touch-ups.

I might get that for me.

Thanks for the replies, All!

For quick sharpening to be used in the field.... You'll be hard pressed to find something more usable than the standard commercial knife sharpeners that are held in one hand against the cutting surface while you simply draw your blade across it... A great example is the Russel Dexter model - just enter Russel knife sharpener on E-Bay and you'll see a bunch of them, all inexpensive and will very quickly put a working edge on a blade...

I'd advise anyone using one to use it lightly - and only as needed. For times when you have the luxury of doing a better sharpening -then a higher end blade system would be appropriate. As a guy who had to cut as much as 300lbs of fish a day years ago - a commercial draw sharpener like the Russel will serve you well...

For my last couple years of military service, I would carry my Lansky knife sharpener to the field. I have a few D2 knives so I sprung for the diamond stone sharpener to put in as well. Very durable sharpener and easy enough for me to use, even in the middle of nowhere.

I have to wonder how much use his knife is getting that he needs to take a lot of time sharpening it instead of just steeling and stropping to maintain the edge. Frequent sharpening usually is overdone when stropping and steeling is what's needed and doesn't remove a material from the edge.

Yep. When I use a kukuri, I'll stop every few minutes, hit the blade with about ten licks of the chakma (a blunt steel), and go back to work.
