I am looking in to getting a rifle for long range ( 500 yds ) shooting and hunting. I am thinking a Remington 700 in a 30 06 . I like this caliber, I have hunted with a BAR 3006 for many years. My goal is to be able to shoot accurately and kill whitetail deer at 500 yds. I would rather not have the recoil of a magnum caliber. Need advice on caliber, manufacturer, and stock material (composite or wood) or any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

This seams like an odd place for this post. This is a competition forum. Will you be competing with this rifle? If so in what environment becuase different games have different rules. In NRA highpower you can shoot out to 600 yards but you have to use open sights. I wouldn't shoot at a deer at 500 yards with open sights so maybe you want to complete in some sporter rifle comp?

Can you provide more detail?

FYI any of the repitalbe company's make good bolt rifles. Remington, Ruger, Savage, Ect. It just matters how you want to set it up based on competition rules.

Marlin XL7

Marlin is making a varmint gun with a 26" barrel in 30-06 or .308 with a syn. stock. It comes with an adjustable trigger and a fluted bolt. I bought this rifle in a laminate stock and the 22" barrel. These guns retail for about $400.-, another gun is the Stevens 200, there are several threads about various after market upgrades and how easy they are to work on.
