Need advice on .45 acp load for ipsc

Hello i just bought my first dillon reloader for 45 acp I have been loading shotgun shells for 6+ years, but now its time for 45.
I have 45 acp 185 grain plated flat point bullets, lg winchester pistol primers, and would like to use clays powder (the same that i use in my shotshells).
Was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions.
I will be using this load for uspsa so i need a power factor 165 +

p.s. i was also considering using titegroup (that i'd have to purchase) but i herd that it was dirty????

Find a friend with a chrono, and work your way up to see if you can make the required speed. that's the only way you'll know for sure.

Checking my reloading manuals and doing some calculating, you can reach your power factor using Clays powder. As the previous poster had said, you will need a chronograph to work up your loads safely. It's my opinion you would be better of using several other powders then the ones you have mentioned. I would aslo suggest buying a good reloading manual(or several) and reading them carefully before you start reloading and working with loads near maximum. Please be safe.

Just look for a Clays loading that will give you 900+ fps. 4.7gr should do it according to the reloading data center for Hodgdon's. You have to have 891fps to make major, and 4.9gr for 981fps is the max load- so you should be able to do so safely.

WST would also be a good choice for powder (if you can find it in the current market) and you can use it in shotshells too. I believe it is one of the powders used to load factory Winchester AA Trap and Skeet loads. Clean burning, and flows well through powder measures.

I would recommend a higher weight bullet as well. I believe there are advantages in the Power factor equation to using a heavier bullet. I use a 230 grain bullet, and others use a 200.

Heavy bullets fast powder. Light bullets slow powder. Better recoil management.

I was using 5.2gr of H-Clays with 150gr, 152gr and 153gr LSWC's in my compensated .45acp 1911.
Found it to be a good fast handling load with mild recoil and very little muzzle jump, not to mention clean burning to boot, sometimes shooting many thousands of rounds before doing a strip down and clean.

Most pistol shooters use 200-230 grain bullets.
Save the 185's for other games.
Clays is a fine powder for 230's. WST has worked for my 200's
Solo 1000 has a good reputation.

Clays is too fast a powder to use in this application.

For the .45 Auto I use Clays or W231 for my target loads but I use AA#5 when I need more velocity. AA#5 is clean and accurate in a .45 Auto, after all, it was developed specifically for the .45 Auto. AA#5 will give you what you need and do it well.
