My son has gotten into CAS. He saved up and bought a Uberti mod 1873 Cattleman, which is a pretty sweet little gun. We have smooth the action and the gun shoots perfect for me. I can bust shooting clays at 30 yrds. dead on. I am leveling the gun out with a full bead.

The problem lies with my 13 year old. He is shooting high. He claims that he is having to hold a very fine bead. I know that my longer arms have a lot to do with it, but is there something I can do to help him out? Is there a modification I can make to the gun? Or do you have any suggestions in what I should teach him in his stance, and/or hold?

Assuming the ammo is the same and the sight picture is the same, the main question is hold. A handgun is very sensitive to one-hand vs. two-hand hold, any part of the gun touching a bench or rest, etc. Also, the typical SAA has a long hammer fall, and the shooter must train himself to not let the gun move after pulling the trigger. In most cases, the latter fault will cause shooting low, but in some cases it can result in shooting high.

To help, let him shoot, and just watch from the standard coaching position at the side side how he does it. (Be sure to have eye and ear protection in case of side blast!)
