My AR just loves Varget (25.4) with Sierra 69 MK..as many of yours do.

  • DPMS Lo-pro upper
  • Krieger barrel -26 in SS, match chamber, 1:9, fluted
  • Young NM lite carrier and bolt
  • RRA lower - 2 stage trigger, Magpul PRS
  • Nikon Monarch 6.5-20 x 44 scope, harris bipod
I'm curious regarding other powders and bullets, in my quest for greater accuracy.
  • AA2230
  • reloader 15
  • Win 748
  • H 4198
  • Hornady 75g A-Max
  • Sierra 77g MK
(although 1:9 twist, the barrel seems to stabilze down to 50 and up to 70's)

All my shooting is off bench or prone and not past 300 yds.

I'm quite aware that every rifle is unique...
Im just sort of curious if the components above are as 'loved'
as the Sierra 69g MK BTHP and Varget combo.

Any feedback on the above is appreciated.

TIA

RL15 would be best for the mid to the heavy wt bullets
AA2230 would be best for the lighter bullets.....

TAC would be a good choice too for mid to heavy bullets....

I was able to stabilize the 80gr SMK in a Rem700P with 1/9 twist bbl to get decent accuracy.....and it shot well with 75gr VLD type bullets from Berger, Starke, and the Amax....

my greatest success w/ ar-15's have come w/ h-322

i have loaded a few rounds with 322 and i love the way it meters. if it shoots as well as it meters im going to be very happy, and it will be my new favorite 223 powder.

another nice thing about 322 is that every few (7-8) rounds your gonna get a "powder freeby" because it takes so much less of it.

i also noticed you can get a lot more rounds from a hopper full because of this, as well as it being smaller extruded pellets than varget.

plus i wont have to hear the powder crunch like varget does with certain loads.

if its as clean and accurate as varget, im sold on it.

I try to load combinations that shoot well in any rifle, if it will shoot at all.

I have a 1:9 20" barrel I purchased years ago. The only thing in consistently shoots well is 26.5gr 748, a 52gr match bullet (any), LC or WRA case, and CCI primer. With that it shoots well under an inch at 100 yards. If you have no wind, or the wind comes from behind, it will shoot little groups at 200 also.

This same load shoots well in every AR I've tried it in.

try VV140

instead of changing weights in SMK, try berger bullets
