I have my grandfathers old colt woodsman but one of the grips and the screw have apparently been lost to time somewhere. Does anyone know what the most economical option is to get the gun shooting again? Someplace I can buy 1 side of the wood set or maybe a plastic set?

Here is what I have:

And while we're on the subject...does the magazine come apart for cleaning?

I have an identical Woodsman that came with a set of fairly ugly home-made grips. My notes indicate that I got a set of "Vintage" brand hard rubber grips for it from Brownell's back in 1997. Other than being black instead of natural wood, they fit, look, and worked fine. So try Brownell's website. Googling might work as well.

Just looked at my Woodsman magazine. It doesn't look practical to take it apart. I would just simply pull down the follower (don't let it get away and snap up; those old mags aren't easy to find anymore) and get after it with some Q-tips.

There is also a site out there with quite a lot of info on Woodsman pistols; believe the site owner is named Rayburn.

Nice guns.

He has parts nobody else has.
He might even be able to match your other grip fairly close as to color & grain.

All Woodsman Magazines are very easily taken apart for cleaning.

Look at the slot the thumb button rides in.
Just below the top there is a wider hole in the slot.

1. Depress the follower with a pop-cycle stick (or something that won't scratch) until the thumb button aligns with the hole.

2. Pull it out of the follower.

3. The spring & follower can now be pulled out the top of the mag.

As rcmodel says...I would, however, either point it in a safe direction or stifle the outward movement of the follower and spring as they can fly a bit of a distance...To reassemble just reverse the procedures after retreaving the spring and follower from under the couch...:D

Thanks for the mag directions, its not quite as nice as being able to take off the whole base plate but I got a bunch more junk out than I ever could with brake cleaner and holding the follower down!

I'll follow up on the grip options too, thanks. I think I checked brownells last time I ordered from them and they didn't carry anything for the woodsman line anymore. Any springs worth replacing while I'm at it?
