i got a black 12 gage mossberg maverick 88 28 in barrel its new got it from walmart will it be a good gun for turkey. and can i shoot 00 out buck shot from a x full choke or will mod be better

1, it'll work for turkey with a tight choke and proper loads.

2, Buck USUALLY works best from some choke but not as much as full.

3, Nobody uses buck for turkey. Try various loads of 4, 5 or 6 shot.

4, In either case, whether this is used for turkey or some activity requiring buck, patterning is imperative.

5, Welcome aboard.....

Beware of the Maverick 88 they do strongly resemble the Mossberg 500 but they are not the same . I have one at home that was in effect given to me because the action rail had broken out of the plastic foregrip. Unlike the Mossy the rail is just pinned into the plastic grip on the one I have the pinned area broke the rail loose, in the mossy the rails are attached to a metal collar that is in the fore grip. I don't know under what circumstances it broke but I wouldn't want it to do it to me when I really needed for it to work.

As for the 28 in bbl and x full choke It should do jsut fine for turkey if it patterns good and you can shoot 00 buck through it though I doubt you'll get very good performance and undoubtedly will get a really good kick form it. that is of course if the x full choke maker says it's ok as several state very clearly the maximum shot size to be used with their choke.

As new guy here I hope I didn't step on too many toes.

Another consideration on Buckshot for use on Turkey...

In some states, buckshot in your posession while hunting but NOT during Deer season WILL land you a 55-Gallon barrel of trouble with the Game & Fish guys. (Will cause you major grief anytime in Ohio, slugs only for deer.)

Buckshot does not have a dense enough pattern for turkey.

I have the exact same gun

Only modified choke. I use winchester 4 shot 3" shells for turkey. Not had a problem knocking them down with one shot.

thanks. have you had something wrong with your gun my fireing pin stoped working

I own a Maverick 88.
I replaced the action tube/forend assembly with a Mossberg 500 set-up, never had a problem there and I never wanted one so I changed the parts out...
It is good to be a gunsmith and have parts boxes full of stuff just lying around waiting for a project,,,,

Don't shoot any kind of buckshot through an extra full choke tube.

My recommendation for turkey is 3" #5 copperplated shot load through a plain old full choke, tube or otherwise.

If your firing pin stopped working, check to see if the barrel is fully bottomed into the receiver recess and screwed on tight.

Mossberg and Mavericks are not noted as unreliable guns if everything is installed properly.

just got back my maverick 88 back and it shoots great good pattern at 40 yards with mod choke and 2 3/4 in bird shot going to use a full and see how it patterns at 40 45 50 yards

How did you replace the frontend... I am new to shotguns, and my local gunstore duped me into thinking that the Maverick 88 was the Mossberg 500... And I want to change the frontend of the gun but do not know how to convert it to the Mossberg 500 frontend without rails...

Please provide me with a list of parts and prices if you can..

I recently bought a Maverik 88 at Acadamy . I have since read the earlier guns had a single operating rail / rod . My gun has two . Which I read is like the Mossburg 500 ?

God bless
Wyr

The early Mossberg 500's and the Maverick 88's both had single action rails.

My 1990 Vintage Maverick has the single rail/bar as well as my late father-in-law's OLD Mossy 500 (approx 1964-65 vintage).
