I'd like one more gun for my collection and am trying to decide between a rifle or a large caliber handgun.. I have a tactical Remington 870 12g, Glock 17 (10 Rd due to CA) and Rossi 351 .38 BUG. Should I get a rifle or a large caliber handgun? The rifle would add versatility to my arsenal but I havn't looked into rifles in years! Whats a decent CA approved man stopper that can go the distance as well? Not really interested AKs or ARs unfortunately.. Price cap is 800 for base gun, must be CA approved..

It really depends on your use for it. Knowing nothing else I would suggest a good solid bolt action rifle or perhaps a lever gun. In your position I would round off my collection with a rifle, what caliber and other specifics really depend on the intended use.

CA legal? Get a Mini-14 ranch rifle stainless with the all weather composite stock. I think they still run in the $700 range. Get it while you can in California.

You don't need a big caliber handgun. Instead, practice, practice, practice with your G17. It's a great weapon and nobody should feel undergunned with one if you're up to it with the gun.

I never feel outgunned with my off-duty G26 even though my duty is a G21.

The Mini-14 looks like a solid option, and would suit my needs well.. Especially at under 700 for this:

Thanks for the feedback

How come you don't like AR or AK besides the fact that the stupid California laws say you have to either fix the mag or get a stupid monster man grip? Nevermind, I answered my own question.

+1 for the sks. A cheap, reliable effective weapon. Suppose it depends on your needs, I would reccomend this because it's a good 'sweet sarah' or multi purpose rifle. What are your intentions for it, I saw 'manstopper', for defensive purposes? Hunting? Target/plinking? At any rate, the sks is a viable option for any of these things provided you're not hunting real big game or bear.

Get the semi autos while you can in California. While the state suffers under a $40B deficit, they are too busy trying to ban EBRs because the last time someone used them in a crime was 1997... and we have 10 day wait periods while NCIC instant check has been around for a decade. Yet, we are not any safer than most other states... as soon as I find a job out of state, I am gone!

I prefer an EBR, but the mini-14 is a good option in your case, especially in .223/5.56.

EBRs in CA are no better than a single shot with a fancy grip and collapsible stock.

If your gun has any evil features, then you need to have a fixed mag that takes no more than 10 rounds. You can have a bullet button which makes it so you can't drop the mag without a small punch or bullet tip and the mag still can't be more than 10 rounds.

If you don't use the bullet button and fix the mag, on an AR, you have to punch out the frame stud and basically open the AR up in 1/2 to topload the magazine from the inside of the gun.

Why not just buy a SKS if you're going to do that? You at least get a bayonet to stab Bambi with the SKS.

Well. After a couple weeks of shopping, I just picked up a CA legal AK with two 10 round clips.. At $599 the price was right, and it comes with a bayonet too.. Its hard to say no to an AK looking at you with puppy dog eyes, hah!

I must note that the reason I initially was not interested in the AK was because of availability on CA approved models during the run on guns around Obamas Inauguration.

And Notorious, I hear you - 2 10 rd fixed clips for an AK is like giving a growing boy tic tacs for dinner.. Something outlandish like a vegetarian rottweiler or a paper mache m16. But if facing an potential adversary at medium range (100 - 200 yds) I'd rather have 10 M43 carbines than my gauge with 7 shots of 00buck and a single bead sight. Not saying its the best weapon for the task, but suited my specific requirements for this purchase and I should be able to rely upon it for any post apocalyptic scenarios.
