I have several SA M1As and while they all been great rifles one thing really bugs me. I can't get the op rod off any of them without using the screwdriver method as recommended by SA. It there a fix for this - either replacing the op rod or modifying the receiver? I want to be able to strip without tools. Even after firing several thousand rounds the things are friggin' tight.

Both of my SAs are the same way. My Polytech is not.

Dunno.

A friend of mine got the op rod jammed on my SA national match, and it took me a good 45 minutes of screwing around with it until I figured out the trick to it; it was not the same as my Polytech which never had problems. That was a few months ago, and now I can't remember enough to describe it. I'll grab it and see if I can figure it out again.

Arright, I just did it a few times in a row, being able to dislodge it from the bolt. This gun hasn't been fired very much either, so it may be similar to yours.

When you're pulling back on the op rod to take it off the receiver, pull up on the charging handle all the way back. When you get to the rear receiver notch where it comes out, pull outwards, and keep upwards pressure on the charging handle knob. It should pop right out.

Hope this helps.

I have an M1A and I have to agree with D-Day that this is the correct method. Please be careful with a screwdriver.

+1 to D-Day & Rshooter; I've never had a problem getting mine out, in fact I've done it on accident a few times by charging it with the knife edge of my hand instead of with my thumb. My polytech is identical to my SAI as far as take down method & pressure applied to achieve it.

I have alot of trouble with my springfield m1a also. A friend of mine has the touch ,after I cant pull the op rod he can do it a second it pisses me off he makes it look so easy .

It is a struggle to get the oprod off my NM M1A. The first time I broke the rifle down I thought I was doing something wrong and was going to break it. I just fiddled with it for a while and got it to slip right out.

RE: Need help fromM14/M1A gurus

You need to change the title of this thread, M-1A's DO NOT dissemble the op-rod from the action the same way M-14's do.

They don't on fully automatic M-14's but the other semi auto versions do. M1A is just the SAI copyrighted name, my Fed-Ord & my Poly both have M14 stamped on them & they both take down the same way as the M1A.

imho that whole idea of lumping all semi auto M14 versions into the M1A category is tired. If it's an SAI, it's an M1A, if not...it's an M14S or SA or whatever that manufacturer uses. Curse SAI for creating a complication where none existed before.

Pull the op rod all the way back to the notch and pull up and out at the same time.
Sometimes you need to wiggle the rod a little bit.
I have yet to deal with an M1A rifle that I had to resort to a screwdriver to get the op rod off of the receiver.

If they are really tight it sometimes helps to use the thumb of your off hand to push down on the top of the operating rod where it begins to bend down into the action while pulling up and out on the handle.

Thanks for all the suggestions. So far no joy. I can field strip a friend's Norinco with ease, but this frigging M1A will not give up the op rod

Tim Strait @ warbirds mentioned some Springers were out of spec in the op-rod channel; something about some being fitted too tight. Can't really recall the specifics. Might drop by his forum & pose the question to him.
