My 646 was having light hit misfires. I put in an apex(?) extended firing pin and a new strain screw that has'nt been filed at all screwed in all the way. It functions 100% in SA and 50% in DA. Why!?!?! It's driving me insane! The primer hits are as deep as can be in SA, just on the verge of piercing 100% of the time. I shot about 100 rds. today and one primer was pierced just barely. The hammer is full size and original also, the widest and I assume heaviest hammers they make. Why won't it function in DA? This gun has had this problem since I bought it new, before in SA also. Thanks in advance.

Why haven't you sent it back to S&W? Headspace and cylinder chambers are two things that come to mind.

This gun has the largest cylinder gap of any S&W I own, about 10 of them so if the cylinder needs to be moved back, I guess it'll get even larger? I don't know that much about it. Pretty much all 646's have chambers too deep to fire without moonclips. They were designed to be shot with moonclips only and I was using thick Rimz. I have another 646 in the safe, unfired. The gap on it is much tighter and I'm tempted to break it out and use it to see if it'll give me problems.

The case support in that gun should be on the case mouth, not on the moon clips. The clips are for extraction, not case support. Are you using handloads? If so, check the crimp; you should be using a light taper crimp like the .45 ACP. If your crimp has too much roll, you won't get good case support and you will get light primer strikes.

Of course, the primer strike is always lighter for DA than SA. It is a function of hammer momentum, and the longer the hammer fall, the more momentum. Your DA fall is on the edge, so that any lack of case support will cushion the primer strike and give misfires.

Hello friends and neighbors // How large is cylinder gap? I don't like that part.

Call S&W they will send you free round trip shipping label. Repair revolver for free ( life time warrenty is no joke)

Last time I sent one in this way, Fed X brought back revolver( to my house) the same day USPS delivered letter verifying S&W had received it.
I asked my FFL to ship it out for me. He did it for free, they ship stuff around all the time, he even boxed it up.

Send it back to the company calling itself S&W. Eventually they will get it right. In any case they usually pay postage both ways.

Take your parts out, put the original parts back in, and send the thing off to S&W.
