I found these pictures from a website claiming that this is gear currently in use with certain units in the Russian military. I haven't seen this stock before and I'm curious if anyone recognizes it.

Thanks,

Interesting. I've seen aftermarket ones that look similar, but I'm not sure what they're using or if it's official. It doesn't look like the AK-12 stock or like the earlier folding stocks.

Could be AK74 based.

With stocks, optics, drum, etc., etc., likely weighs north of 15 pounds. Add another 5 for the watch.

I also question the need for all of the M4esque stuff. The AK system is best if kept simple. That's it's primary strength. You don't need all the fooferaw and gewgaws. Also, when you add all that weight to one with a light folding stock it tends to get front-heavy fast. The forward pistol grip is needed not merely as a reference point for your hand but to actually hold the danged thing up.

I've seen that stock before, it is, or was, a prototype design to be used on new production AK-74 style rifles. I'm guessing it's no longer a prototype though and is now being used. Pretty cool actually. I kinda want one but I'm betting it's expensive, unavailable, or both.

And yeah, those drums look heavy. Anybody know what 75 rounds of 7.62x39 weighs? Probably a lot. I bet it rattles like crazy too which would completely ruin your "stealth tactical entry."

It's listed on here as a prototype, but clearly it is being used somewhere so I'll have to keep poking around.

Is that an Aimpoint in the top picture? I'm pretty sure Russians don't issue US-made equipment...

I'm not sure whether they issue it or not, but they certainly use it. I've seen all kinds of stuff made by magpul and streamlight being used by Russians, not to mention eotechs. They seem to love eotech products.

Yes heaven forbid we change out the too short wood fixed stock for something that is adjustable to fit the shooter, and how dare one add an optic to compensate for the iron sights everyone seems to whine are a weak point of the AK, and don't even think about a grip and a light so you can hold it and see what ya shooting even if its dark. Yes all these should be reserved for the AR else the AK might you know pretty much be an equally useful weapon. :banghead: Now get off my lawn :neener:

Sure looks like one to me, the rifle in the bottom 2 pics looks like it has some kinda night vision equip on it.

They aren't light weight pushing about 3.5-4 lbs ammo alone, the drum is a little heavier than a mag but not that heavy really. I doubt it'd be any heavier than 2.5 loaded regular mags it'd take to hold the same amount of ammo.

As far as rattling, not sure if those style drums rattle as much, but the rear loading and winding one rattle like a piggy bank in a paint shaker.

I'm 6'5 and I have always liked the feel of the short AK stocks. For some stupid reason I changed out the stock on my old AK to a Dragunov style. And I love standard AK sights, just wish they had a longer sight radius. The only complaints I have with AKs is they ding up brass pretty good and those front hand guards still get damn hot when you don't let the rifle cool down.

As the old Russian proverb says, "the best is the enemy of the good." The AK-47/74 platform is designed around that wisdom. The more you add, the further you get from the core of the platform and the more complex it becomes. In a quest for the ideal, you lose sight of the good enough. Personally I like both AR's and AK's. But they're built around very different theories of combat. I think the AK is superior as a medium range assault rifle. The AR is superior as a target and hunting rifle.

For example, while you can add optics to the AK (and I have a Rakurs myself), the platform isn't really accurate enough to justify much magnification. And it isn't set up for a cheek weld with the high scope.
