I was wondering if anybody here could tell me something about this...got it from my dad because I've been wanting a .22 pistol for plinking, etc. and he just had it tucked away somewhere. My grandparents owned a Western Auto store a long time ago and kept all kinds of guns...he just ended up with it. Couldn't find much about it anywhere.

It's a Hi-Standard. The left side of the frame reads:

"High Standard Mfg. Corp. New Haven, Conn. USA"
"Cal. 22 Long Rifle"

On the slide, it says:

"HI-STANDARD MODEL-GD"

Anybody know anything about these? Is it worth having around? It appears that the serial # is 317377 if that helps anything. Thanks in advance, fellas.

Yep, I've had a couple of the GD models over the years. It was a mid line model. Not quite as refined as the several premium target models. It was what you might call an entry level target model. Basically it was the Sport King model with adj. sights and bull barrel. I think it is superior to the Ruger and Browning .22's available today. It would be hard to beat for a general purpose .22 pistol. Some of the High Standard target models have gotten down right pricy. I don't know what your model is bringing on today's market, but if you are a gun person, it is a keeper.

There were 4 models in the G series with the GD in the middle. It should have a medium weight barrel. That series was made from the 1940s till 1950.

I had use of a Hi-Standard about 2 years when I was 12-13 in the
early '60s. It was the base model Dura-Matic. Slimmer barrel and simpler
sights than the GD.
