I recently inherited this and not real sure what I have. Only markings above stock that are visible is mark/emblem on bolt and SN: J3435. I removed the stock to reveal FN, Made in Belgium and some random marks (proof marks maybe-still researching them). I can’t even find what caliber is on it ANYWHERE. Any help, guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

It is certainly an FN Mauser made in Belgium but with Sako adjustable trigger and side safety. Old enough that they were still drilling and tapping for a receiver sight. Leupold STD scope mount (Redfield design.)

Caliber would normally be marked on the left side of the barrel above the stock line, just in front of the receiver ring.
If it isn't, maybe you could rummage around in your benefactor's effects and find ammo that does not match other rifles in the collection.

Failing that, you are down to the Always Recommended chamber cast.

Early Weatherbys were made on commercial Mauser actions by Sako.

Not saying this is a Weatherby but it might be a Sako Mauser similar to those Weatherbys.

This does not explain the lack of markings.

I remember in the 1950s and 1960s practically every mail order house and department store chain carried nicely sporterized Mauser 98s and proudly advertised those made on FN Mauser actions. Also I have seen Mauser sporters made by individual gunsmiths on FN actions over the decades too.

If the barrel is unmarked with caliber, I would recommend having a gunsmith determine the chamber size and the bore groove and land diameters as well.
