Need help ID'ing a Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk1...

I bought this No.4 Mk1 from a guy at work today. I paid $200 because it looked pretty nice and I've always wanted one, but I'd like to know if I got a good deal or if I got hosed on it. The few markings that are left are mostly unreadable and the stock looks way too nice for the gun's wear.






I also pulled on what I think is the bolt catch and it pulled right out of the receiver,what's that all about? Here's some pictures of that...

Any idea where this rifle was made? What is it worth? The mag has a "S" in a square on the follower, does that mean anything?

The markings on the muzzle end indicate the rifle was imported by Century Arms International of St. Albans, Vermont.

Based on the brass buttplate I'm thinking this is actually a mk2.

I noticed in this picture it has a Savage Magazine in it...........The box with the squared S, or at least the follower is.

It would appear to me that the retainer for the lever is broken. You will have to disassemble the gun in order to find out where the spring and other pieces are and how you can repair it. If the lower end hasn't been lost it should not be too difficult to repair.

When the British did a FTR (Factory Thorough Repair) or overhaul, they routinely removed the original markings and put on the name of the factory doing the overhaul and the date.

That bolt head catch should not come up out of the receiver. It is inserted into its slot from the bottom, then the spring and spring seat inserted, with the seat held in by the end of the magazine catch screw.

Alright I'll try disassembling it and see if I can't fix it.

As far as the markings, I cannot really find any good, clear ones. If this did go through an FTR then they didn't stamp it.

Might check under the hand guards just forward or the receiver. That is were the FTR stamps are on my No1 MkIII

They didn't "stamp" any guns for FTR, the markings were applied with an electric pencil. But those guns have been around, so who knows when/where the markings were later removed.

I looked at it again, saw some really faint electro pencil markings that said "no.4 mk1" and something about "FTR 49" or something like that. So it looks like I've got a rearsenaled(1949), no.4 mk1 with a no.4 mk2 bayonet and a savage magazine.

Mmmmm now I have a reason to pull the Lithgow out. Not that I doubt Jim.

You can doubt Jim on a Lithgow. We were talking about a No. 4 rifle, and my statement about the electric pencil is correct in that context. Sorry for not being more specific.

No need to be sorry. My knowledge of Enfields, of all sort, is lacking. So anything that adds to it is greatly welcomed.
