This may be a really stupid question, but!

I am purchasing a Winchester 70 in 7mm Mag. Excellent condition. Good price. Can use it as is, but I am looking at trying to add a .300 Win Mag barrel, and also us a McMillan stock set that will accomodate a .300 Win Mag barrel and action.

My quetion (in great ignorance) is - can this be done? Can I use the existing action (do the 7mm Mag and the .300 Win Mag have the same seating/bullet base - and there for can I use the same bolt, action, etc for the alteration?). Or, am I showing that I know absolutely nothing about firearms whatsoever - and is this idea completely ridiculous?

If I can add a .300 WM heavy barrel, use most/all of the same components in the action, (or do I have to replace the action, bolt, etc - in which case this idea is useless) and replace the stock to accomodate a larger barrel - which I already have - I may attempt to change the caliber from 7mm WM to .300 Win Mag.

Any advice from folks that know? I sure as hell do not! What is involved in making the change between calibers - if it is possible?

Thanks a ton!

I believe that removing the 7 mag barrel and replacing it with a 300 win mag barrel is all that's needed. Rim and belt dia is the same, the only difference is the 300's OAL is .040 longer.
