My wife and I recently adopted an app. 9 month old male GSD from the local animal shelter and for the first time since becoming a "dog" person, I have not been able to come up with a suitable name for him. Usually I can figure a name for them within a few days, but it has been going on three weeks and I am still stumped.

To keep this thread on topic, firearms related/rights based names will be considered more heavily. Here are the names we have tried so far...

-Jerry Lee (lead dog's name from K9 the movie)
-Elvis (he is mostly black with some tan/rust markings on his underbelly, head and legs)
-Max ( kinda generic, but he is almost identical to my grandparents long passed GSD with the same name)
-Leo (King Leonidas from Molon Labe fame)
-Moses (John M. Browning)

None of them really seemed to fit, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mino

I give up. I AM a dog person but I can't think of what a GSD is. :uhoh: Can you be a little more specific?

Rover, Fido, Spot, Ruff, King, all are possiblities.

Hmmmmhhh......maybe "MUTT" ? ;) :D

- Caesar
- Nero
- Hannibal
- Cato
- Attila
- Napoleon

OR

- Sam (Colt)
- Paul (Mauser)
- Stoner (AR-15)

If it is a really MEAN dog: KERRY

 GSD German Shepherd Dog?? as opposed to a German Shepherd what else?

Minotaur: The name has to be meaninigful to you. Think of your interests and name him accordingly. For example, in the Eiger Sanction, Jack Cassidy's dog was named... no, I'm not going to go there. :uhoh:

Oh....it's a GERMAN Shepherd Dog!

How about:

- Kant
- Marx
- Blücher
- Zieten
- Clausewitz
- Moltke
- Rommel

:D

We had a German Shepard named Ranger. We came up with the name
after watching a Chuck Norris movie where he played a Texas Ranger.
I dont remember what his characters name was but everyone just called him "Ranger".

You could also call him Lucky since you resuced him from the shelter.

Thanks for all of the replies. I started out thinking of names that would mean a lot to me, but none of them seemed to "fit" so thats why I got stumped.

Sam (Colt) as someone suggested would be great, but the only reason we adopted this dog is because our GSD mix named Samson was apparently stolen about three weeks ago. We followed our normal routine of letting him and our other dog out to do their business and he never came back inside. This IS NOT like him at all. I was extremely upset when he disappeared and was reluctant to even get another dog, but I am a sucker for GSD's in general and this was was about to be put down due to not being adopted. Just too soon to use that name again, besides their personalities could not be more different.

"Stoner" is a possibility as he is kinda dopey acting, but I 'm not a huge fan of the AR15/M16 weapons family.

Ala Dan-Siggy...lol. If only I liked Sigs that much. Nothing against them, just never have gotten excited about them.

I am also hoping to keep the name to two syllables, easier when yelling at him :neener: .

xjer...

"I dont remember what his characters name was but everyone just called him "Ranger"."

Sounds like "Lone Wolf McQuade".

minotaur , since he IS German, call him "Gaston". After a famous Austrian gun designer.

:uhoh:

Live with him for 3 weeks to find out he is like. We had a cat that defied naming until my son yelled out one day "stop that you Rascal", quess what stuck.

You could call him Guess, then when anyone asks the name of your dog you just answer Guess, and they guess and you say no, Guess, kind of "Who's on first".

Since your new best friend was about to be "put down" and you saved his life, I'd call him Lucky. Ya done good!

I had a Shepherd/Lab mix years ago named Harley.......guess what I rode?

Keeping it GUN related of course, what's wrong with Mauser (better for a cat I think) Maxim (not really german) Krupp, Luger or HK (Heck for short)?
How about Obie... short for Oberndorf A/N?

My black Lab is name Ruger (picked out by my wife.) It was between that and Winchester. I've always wanted two German Shepherds or Rottweilers named Widowmaker and Undertaker. Then again, I'd love to have a Rottie named Kitty. Imagine the looks on people's face when you call "Here, kitty, kitty," and a Rottweiler comes bounding up.

I had heard that bill clinton was gonna name his dog "spot", but hilary refused to stand on the white house lawn and yell "Come Spot!"

How about "jaeger" I believe it means hunter....

GSD mix named Samson
Holy crap! I'm sitting not more than 10 feet from my own German Shephard by the name of Samson! What a coincidence.

BTW, he did just sort of show up at the home of a buddy of mine, here in CA, who already had 3 Shephards (birds of a feather?). In the 3 years we've had him, he's never tried to escape, take himself on a walk, or otherwise get out alone...I wonder how and why he got away from his previous master...

He'll name himself after a bit.
