I am looking for a gift for some one and I do not know much about over unders.

I have been looking at the Browning citori line as well as the Beretta silver pigeon.

Any help would be great.

Can't go wrong with either in terms of quality or durability. They do feel sort of different, though, with the Browning having a beefier feel and the Beretta more streamlined. It's generally best to let the shooter handle each one, but maybe the aforementioned generalizations can give you a starting point.

Both are very good guns (and NICE gift idea!); however, as mentioned, if one fits, odds are the other one won't -not a better or worse thing, just the way their gun dimensions are. FGIT is a totally personal and subjective thing.

The next factor to consider - is it for field/hunting use or target use? Both makers make versions for the field which tend to be a pound lighter than their target versions - that is great for all day walks where a few shots are fired but brutally painful when you are shooting targets all day without a lot of break time between shots

you're taking a real chance buying an O/U shotgun as a gift. Usually, the end user knows exactly what he or she wants in terms of make, style, gauge, barrel length, etc.

Maybe a large gift certificate from a reputable dealer. That way your friend can choose what he wants, not from a role of the dice...

He has held both of them without knowing what was up he likes them both. This would be more target than field. I know it is a gamble.

then, let him pick his own! I made a big mistake by buying my son a new set of golf clubs for his last birthday. They've been sitting in a corner, but he's sympathetic to me for buying them for him. I told him, sell 'em and get what you like. I rather you be happy instead of worrying about hurting my feelings...

Personal observation has shown me that typically the Browning will have more of a universal "fit" than the Beretta. That said - if the recipient is non-typical, the Browing will provide him with more "felt recoil" than will the Beretta. If you could find a gently used Remington 3200 I would wager that it would fit off-the-shelf better than either of the other choices.

A 3200 is a horrible idea for someone if they don't already have a safe full of guns. They are fragile, fraught with problems, there's virtually no parts available, and only one specialist kn the entire country.

Remington 3200! You have to be kidding! Those are over the hill sewer pipes with little to no parts left for repairs. And Beretta having less felt recoil than a Citori. Now I've heard it all. Oh well, to each his own...

There are quite a few of those over the hill Remingtons that have had the updates still running quite strong on the sporting clays, skeet, and trap lines. I was at the Sporting Clays Nationals a couple of years ago and was surprised at how many I saw, and no one was being paid to shoot them with decals on the barrels either. A friend is a total O/U nut, and has one of 4 Krieghoff Royal Crown grades I know of, a Perazzi - maybe two, several 101s, a couple of Superposeds, and he likes his 3200 best. He also shoots nationally.
I do not like O/Us period in anything other than a little Beretta 28 gauge. Just too tall through the receiver for my tastes, but the Berettas are a tad slimmer. Either of the B guns are well made and will work well for a long time, but their look and feel is quite different. If the recipient is an experienced shooter he will likely have his own preferences, but if not he will likely be quite happy with either.

Don't buy a shotgun for another person. This is an individual choice. If you want to make the gift a surprise, prearrange the whole thing with the gun dealer - including the payment.

Have a time and date set and let the gun dealer get both guns out and ready. Use some excuse to take the person for a "ride" that ends up at the gun dealer and let the whole thing unfold. I guarantee that both of you will have a great time as a morning or afternoon adventure in which you both participate.
