I'd recommend taking a look at a Benelli Nova before you put money down. Not that the Mossberg is a bad choice, but I prefer the Nova.

don't let the bad stories you hear about 12 gauge recoil deter you from getting one. I'm not much bigger than you (5'9" 138 lbs.) and a 12 ga. has never thrown me back, made me stumble, etc. If you get a good one with a good recoil pad, hold it tight to your shoulder, don't put your cheek on the buttstock, and keep a good stance and you won't have to worry about the recoil.

I went with an 8-shot Mossie 500 persuader. I like the safety position and the slide release position; it's good for me since I'm a lefty. Compared to other shotguns, the 500 has a bit longer pull and pump, but it has not bothered me at all. They should also be lighter, which feels nicer to me. I hate the feeling of a heavier gun getting jammed back into you.

I picked up a Mossberg 500 tactical 12g. I'm going to toss a Knoxx stock on it

Everyone here seems to be telling you to try things out, and get what you're comfortable with, not to go off of what someone else tells you. And then they tell you to by no means get a pistol grip. I've been shotting shotguns my entire life, and when I joined the Marine Corps first used a shotgun with a pistol grip and collapsible stock. Thats what I'm in the market for now. I was also looking at the Remington 870 and the Mossberg 500 persuader....so, don't dump that idea just because they said to. I love the way the Benelli(issued shotgun) aimed, fired, and recoiled. Just check it out, and if you like it, go with it.

I bought a 12ga. Mossberg 500 with 18" barrel on gunbroker a little more than a year ago. Only paid $100. Great deal.
I loved it. Stupidly I sold it, because I was leaving for a year and only had room to bring one gun home(my AR).

On the subject of recoil...
I am 5'6" and weigh 140. I have a single shot 20ga. with a 28" barrel that has a much nastier kick than the Mossberg pump in 12ga.
I learned about proper stance while shooting trap in high school. Kids smaller than you can shoot doubles with 12 ga. loads no problem.
I don't see a reason to get a 20.

If you are worried about recoil, definitely don't get the pistol grip, I especially don't reccomend one on a HD weapon.
Just my 2 cents.

I think you will really like the Knoxx Stock. I have one on a Remington 870. Easy to adjust to size and does a great job of taming recoil. Also has the pistol grip that you were wanting...

Did you verify they had them?

I'll fire off an email to them before I order it.

Knoxx may have them ready this week.

And thanks!

SIg, I called Cabela's today & they said it is in stock my order just hasn't shipped yet. I'm not buying it, but I hope they aren't bsing me

Knoxx is suppose to get their shipment this Fri. So maybe they are drop shipping it to you.

Mine came in :)

I will try it out this weekend.

I bought this Mossberg 500 persuader and it is my first shotgun.
I shot 20 Federal Truball slugs yesterday and my mossberg shot 8" high at 10 yds. I held the gun tight and I didn't feel anything in my shoulder but my right jaw stung a bit... Am I doing something wrong? The stock is too high for a proper sight picture(I see the top of the barrel not just bead sticking out). I've also wanted to try Knoxx Spec Ops recoil reducing stock but also heard that the comb was too high for a proper sight picture also. I don't think i'll buy one now since the recoil on my 12 ga wasn't that bad and it would be just a home defense gun.
