I'm trying to remove the bayonet mounting lug from a Mosin M44. Did they braze these in place and pin them? I have tried pressing it out with a 12 ton press and it won't budge. I applied some heat but it may not have been enough.
How much heat can I apply without damaging the barrel?
The idea is to replace this with one that I removed the lug from and install a Mojo front sight. I want to save the original.

They're not welded in place. That would damage the barrel. I believe that they're pinned and soft-soldered on. I think the pins are tapered pins and some significant heat is required to break it loose. It might not be soft soldered, but an interference fit. Not an easy thing to do, but definitely do-able.

This whole think should come off as an assembly (photo from libertytreecollectors.com ) :

The replacement is from Liberty Tree. It doesn't look like it was ever solder in place. I'm not sure how much heat I should apply or if that would help.

First, if you haven't done so, get the pins out. You're not going anywhere with that as long as the pins are in place. Use the proper sized punch to move them and check to see of one end is smaller than the other. Drive from the small end. 350-400 degrees will most likely be enough to melt the solder. Might help break the pins loose, too. Having an assistant available to hold the torch while you drive out pins/drive off mount will be ever so much better.
