I have a M44... Does anyone know if the front and rear sight assemblies are simply pressed on or are they brazed or soldered as well?

<Oh, they are pinned (1x in the rear sight, 1x in bayonet lug, 1x in front sight base) and pressed on...>

Mil rifles sights

Almost all military sight bases are lead soldered on.

If you thinking of removing or replacing one, try a place on the bottom of the rear sight and apply a torch, set a soldering heat. the lead when it gets hot will bead out.

Be aware also that there are usually set screws, piloted screws or pins that have to be removed before trying to remove these sights not removing one will cause damage to sight.
