I need some help, i think i have decided on a .223 bolt action rifle for my first centerfire rifle. I need some cheap ammo just to use at the range. it dosent have to be super accurate. I was wondering if i should order ammo off the internet. And do the online stores have extra shipping charges for ammo? Weight? and how much shipping would be for example 1,000 rounds? i do not reload so the cases don't have to be brass.

Thanks,

A.C.

.223 is an excellent choice for a first centerfire rifle. Cheap, low recoil, reasonably accurate. I don't own anything in that caliber, but I've heard plenty about it. I've found that a lot of online places really hose you with shipping/handling costs. I'd suggest going to a gun show or a gun shop and buying yourself some ammo. I think I saw some white and green box Remington .223 going for around $5. Wolf might be a good choice for cheap blasting ammo, just be careful. The steel cases and laquer may or may not be bad for your gun, depends on who you ask. In any case, be safe and good shooting to you.

Bill Goodman's Gun and Knife show at the Hara Arena. Been there several times myself. Here's a link:

And, if I recall correctly, you can use .223 in a gun chambered in 5.56 but not the other way around. I think the 5.56 is a military round that has higher chamber pressure than the 223. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

Wolf and Barnaul (Brown Bear, Sliver Bear) have worked just great for me in my AR. I've got probably 1,500 rounds through mine. Just make sure to clean your chamber really well.

The problem is finding someone with it in stock.

Yes that is it, reason I feel he should read and then buy, based on finding.
He should do the research and then he will know, reason for the link.

5.56 surplus is above saami pressure specs, and not reccomended for .223rem chambers, more so due to overpressure from a tighter leade. Rem white box are ok, WOLF/brown bear are hard on the bolt/pin/extractor and the bullet/primer sealant can melt and gum up the works, overall not normally worth it. IMO the best value is black hills for a bolt, depending on twist rate aroud 50gr for 1-12 and around 60 for 1-9. a bolt is not really for throwing mass quantities of cheap lead, most of the fun is found in rewards from good accurate shooting

Wal-Mart sells cheap Remington FMJ for around $6.80 for a 20 round box, when they have it in stock. That's not bad.
