need help with first gun

i am in the military. i am a resident of illinois. But i am based in new jersey. i have a foid card and IL state id. if i want to buy a gun, can i buy the gun in new jersey? if no then can i buy the gun in new jersey and have it shipped to a dealer in IL? Or if you guys know any better ideas please share them with me. thanks a lot for the help.

Are you permanently stationed in NJ? If so, then your orders should be all that is needed (at least as far as Federal law is concerned).

You'll need a firearms id card to buy long guns in NJ or a pistol purchase permit to buy a handgun. Do you live off post? If so you have to go to the police dept where you live for these and get fingerprinted, criminal history, mental health, and background checks. If you live on post I think you go to the State Police for these.

i live on base. i was told at the police station that since it is federal property and i am not a new jersey resident i can not buy from new jersey. i am still technically an IL resident. I have my gun card from IL and state id. im up at earl. Thats y i wonder if i have to get the gun in IL since i have an IL gun card. Don't know if i can buy in jersey and have shipped to Il? very confused

Call the NJ State Police Firearms dept in Trenton and they will answer any questions you have. This is a PIA state for residents to buy, I do not think there any exceptions on the books for non resident Military. Don't forget you need permission from your CO to bring a firearm on base. If the guys in the tents search your vehicle and find a gun, it can be your a$$.
