New Jersey spends $324,000 to promote Citizen Disarmament

Mercer County, New Jersey has spent about $324,000 to pay people to turn in firearms on the 24th and 25th of January. The turn in was a "no questions asked" event that brought in over 2,600 guns, mostly hunting rifles and shotguns, with a few rarities and guns illegal in New Jersey. Sales of guns are highly regulated in New Jersey which has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country. Private sales of handguns are forbidden, with a separate permit required for each handgun purchased.

Purchasers of rifles and shotguns must have a New Jersey FID card and must provide the seller with a written form assuring them that the FID holder is eligible to buy the gun.

There were no reports of private sellers paying market rates for the guns that were turned in.

The term "buy back" is emotionally charged and irrational. The guns in question were never owned by the people "buying them back" in the first place. Turn in is a more logical description.

Vincent Cisternino claims that the "buy backs" are illegal under New Jersey law:
"Senator Turner has failed to read NJ law. New Jersey law provides for the voluntary surrender of firearms only when the person giving up the firearms first gives written notice to the chief of police where he resides or the state police superintendent. Anonymous surrender is not authorized and in fact violates the law. The same law authorizes only the local police chief or the state police superintendent to receive surrendered guns. (See N.J.S.A. § 2C:39-12.)

A gun buy back program is just that, a gun purchase. The purchase of firearms in New Jersey is strictly prohibited except for licensed dealers and individuals with a handgun purchase permit or firearms ID card. All gun sales are recorded and include the name and address of the seller. Unless there is a federal firearms licensed dealer making purchases with forfeited criminal money, this program is not authorized and illegal under the statute to purchase firearms. The payment of cash for firearms by anyone other than a licensed dealer or a permit/ID cardholder is a crime. N.J.S.A § 2C:58-3(a) and (b).

Well I guess when NBC News’ David Gregory nor any employee of the broadcast network were charged for violating the DC city’s gun laws on-air TV. Gun turn in events are political theater designed to make armed citizens appear to be illegitimate, and to make firearms appear to be contraband. Their practical effects are to waste police resources, defraud ignorant gun owners of the market value of their property, and to increase the demand for new guns as they decrease the numbers of used guns on the market.

The idea of destroying valuable property as some sort of sacrifice to political correctness is absurd.

I have never thought about that... They are violating the law. The guns are being transferred illegally. I wonder why the ATF is not arresting people when they do this? Interesting to note the governments position on "gun buy backs" versus the sale of raw milk.
 
$324k would have rebuilt a part of the boardwalks. or gotten Sandy Hook (the real one, not the school) back into shape to receive visitors WHO PAY to get on the Hook in the summer.

If private citizens are making the sale, then ATF should not be involved.

NJ has no problem spending money they don't have.


Also, just bringing a gun to one of these "buybacks" is actually a felony in NJ under the transport laws. The police choose not to enforce the laws on those turning in guns but I GUARANTEE they would if private citizens set up camp to outbid the state.

That worked GREAT for all the black people who suffered from Jim Crowe laws.

I hope so....we need him to declare his true colors now so we get a conservative presidential candidate in the next election cycle instead of the moderates we've had since 1984.

I couldn't agree more, everyone thinks that fat slob is so great but they're completely ignorant of what he really stands for and believes in.

I've learned a lot about Christie in the last few months, not at all what he was reported to be. Damn glad we found out now before he got any further, at least from a non NJ resident here.
 
It's gonna take a lot more than MONEY to get me to hand in my weapons.

It'll take (at least) a platoon.

Hopefully I put up enough of a fight to justify more than that.

Don't be so quick to judge Christie. Think about the fact that he is governor of THE most anti-gun state in the country (yes I spent many years living in NJ). Strict, draconian gun laws are a way of life in the state. Staunch supporters of the 2A don't exist in NJ politics, with rare exceptions. Given his upcoming reelection campaign, AND his presidential ambitions, Christie doesn't want to come across as either too friendly OR too hostile towards the 2A. Hence why despite being under tremendous pressure to do so, he chose to start a "violence task force" as opposed to a Cuomo-like reaction directly attacking guns. I give him credit for that. But like someone mentioned above, he is a politician. He's just trying to play his cards right. But I think he's more of an ally than an adversary in the grand scheme of things.
 
Now here's a question about turning all these "no questions asked" turn ins to our advantage.

Let's say, hypothetically, that I live in Joisy. If someone from the government comes a'knockin' on my door to confiscate a handgun that was registered to me, what stops me from lying and saying that I turned it in at a "buyback." There are no questions asked.

Or do the keep records of the serial numbers submitted so that there is a database against which to check such a claim?

Well said. I'm here in CT and cannot move. My wife and I are not in a position where we could simply uproot our lives and move elsewhere. That's why I am staying here, behind enemy lines, and fighting the good fight!
