Here is the situation. I bought a S&W Sigma 40 enhanced from a cop I work with about a year, year and a half ago. Private transfer, etc. No paperwork needed.
I recently sold this pistol to a friend who is in the Army. He was recently shipped to NC to prep for the sandbox. He registered the pistol on post with no problems, but his commanders are telling him he needs to register it in the civilian world. Does NC require any type of gun or gun owner registration?
I have never heard of this with exceptions of places like CA, IL, etc.
Since he bought the pistol in the state that he lived in at the time (he transfered from Army Reserve to Active Duty) what are the procedures?
He contacted me saying he needs to get the ATF number...I have no clue about that either, unless he means a 4473 transfer number or something of the like.

Can anyone help? He is worried because his commanders are up his ### (his words) about the deal.

Thanks for any help.
Maurice

His commanders don't know the law. A few localities in NC will take voluntary registration, but there is none required by law in NC, and thus the commanders are simply ignorant in the matter.
