Need help with S&W J frame

I seem to have been bitten by the J frame bug!! I've looked at the 442 and 642, and like the enclosed hammer, but the dealers in this area seem to have gotten at deal on the 637's and are selling them for ~$350. I seem to remember reading that the hammer spur could be dremmeled off, is that something that can be done without disassembly? Sorry for all of the questions, I'm familiar with semi's, but this will be my first wheel gun. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm sure you could remove the hammer spur without disassembly, but am equally sure you'd end up with lots of small bits of metal in the works, which wouldn't do your firearm a speck of good.

Removing the hammer from a J frame takes about three minutes, and replacing it when you're done about the same amount of time.

Its actually pretty simple to take the hammer out of a J frame .I just did as a project a hammer Bobb on a 36 . It basically involves taking off the grips then the hammer mainspring then the sideplate and then manupulating the hammer out reasembly is the reverse. If you are going to bobb the hammer remove it you dont want that metal grit ending up in your action.

I'd try and find a used hammer and bob that one...new ones go for around 40 bucks and someday you may want the original for resale value or just to put back on for yourself...

But don't forget that if you replace the hammer as suggested above-- the "new" hammer must be fitted to the gun -- including the DA spur unless you pull the one off the hammer currently in the gun--
