Visited my nephew-in-law this week and he pulled out this old Winchester 1907 in .351, semi-auto but you had to push a rod to the rear to chamber a round. That rod was located under the front part of the barrel.

Anyway he can not find any ammo for it and wants me to reload what brass he already has. I check my speer manual and no data for any .351.

Please some help!

From the Lyman #45 manual (couldn't get the page to scan)

bullet dia.= .351
cast bullet = .352
max length 1.380"
trim to 1.376
max OAL 1.900
primer = small rifle

Loads must be near max to ensure that the action in an '07 will function. Use .348 gas checks with cast bullets. Best accuracy was with IMR 4227 powder.

180 grain jacketed bullet
Unique 10.0 to 11.0 grains fps 1501-1587
2400 17.0 to 19.0 fps 1597 - 1793
IMR 4227 17.0 to 19.5 fps 1400 - 1751 (19.5 grain load is compressed charge)

If you want the cast bullet loads, let me know.

This just a musing on MY part, so keep that in mind when deciding what YOU will do when reloading for, and shooting this rifle.
If I had such a rifle in good condition, I think I would hope for a load that is JUST powerful enough to operate the action. Heavier loads will just wear it and stress it faster. All factors being equal, I would EXPECT that lower pressures will be obtained with slower-burning powders (2400, H4227, etc.) and cast bullets. If your friend intends to hunt with it, then more emphatic loads with a jacketed pill may be the way to go. I think I'd be inclined to turn a fine old rifle like this one into an "occaisional plinker" and keep the loads low and slow. Just my 2 cents worth.

Interesting post..

I too have this rifle. Its in fantastic condition although I've never shot it. I'm sure the rifle has great history behind it. I figure this one was used by the Penal system somewhere, locked up in a rack.

I do reload/cast several calibers but haven't thought too much about getting the dies etc to start. I would like to fire it one day.

I'll be watching this thread.

Happy Fathers Day to all !

ETA: I agree with the KOSH post above
