Have an old fart (I've got some age on me but this guy is OLD) that shows up at the local gun club and watches other small bore pistol shooters do their thing. He offers advice and almost begs to borrow a pistol to shoot. He has done this for some time. One of us finally asked why he never has his own gun. The old man then drags out a beautiful Hi Standard Supermatic! ....... you know, the one with the taperd barrel, comp, barrel weights etc. The problem is...no rear sight. We can locate an original adjustable rear sight for arround $200 but the guy can't afford it. Fixed sights for the Sport King, Flite King and Field King can be had for something he can afford BUT will they fit the dovetail in the Supermatic? and will they be high enough so as not to have to cut the front blade too much? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Did you say that you're in a club?

Why hasn't someone loaned the guy a pistol? Better still, why not a club collection to buy the guy a sight for his pistol?

er: Hi Standard.

Maybe I should have gone on further, we have tried both of those....the old guy is PROUD.....will not take 'charity' or 'a damn handout'. He is on S.S. and a small pension, as close as we can find out. When he shoots one of our guns...it's with HIS ammo and after shooting, the gun and mags are wiped clean with his silicone cloth. If we can find out about the rear sight situation he will accept SOME help in the instalation, but to even give him the idea that he is being GIVEN something just pisses him off. Again, thanks. Mike

The OLD Fuff goes back far enough to remember that most of the "space-barreled" guns had the rear sight mounted on a bridge attached to the frame. If the slide is dovetailed for a sight it's a special size common to only Hi-Standard pistols.

The last of the original company's parts ended up with Numrich (www.e-gunparts.com) and I would do some exploring there.

Thinking outside of the box, A gunsmith could mount a short rib on the slide, and then put a (whatever) rear sight on it. This should cost well under $200.

Re: Hi Standard Info.

Thanks Lee, that looks like the place to go for the info needed. Old Fuff, been to Numerich, Jack First, etc....that's why I need to know if any of the available sights will fit. Thanks to all. Mike

Look on gunbroker or ebay.

On the old slant grip models the rear sight was mounted either on the rear of the barrel or on the slide. On the latter military grip models the rear sight was mounted on a bridge over the slide attatched to the frame as Old Fuff speaks of.
Here is a pic of all three mounts on my High Standards.

How about a "covert collection" and then one magically turns up on some website for a price he can afford????? Sounds like he may not have internet availability so he wouldn't be able to check your story. Sometimes a little white fib can be justified if it doesn't hurt anyone and it's for a good cause.....

A "look what we found in the back of a drawer" moment. If he balks tell him it's not his, it's only on loan from the club as long as he owns the gun. Then let him die with it.
