I ran across one of these today.

Gun was a stainless 4" six shot revolver with what looked like factory Pachmayr presentation grips. Grips had a weird way of mounting to the gun with a single screw in the rear bottom of the grip frame.

Gun was chambered in .357. Thought it was .357 Magnum, but after looking up the model 740 online, I'm seeing that it might me a .357 Maximum.

The gun was in good shape and listed for $599.

Can some of the resident Dan Wesson experts help me with info? Thanks.

The model 740 is a stainless 357 Super Mag (Maximum). The "7" indicates stainless steel where a model 40 is a 357 Super Mag in carbon steel.

Actually, that is a great price, especially with a 4" barrel, that is pretty uncommon for that gun.

A 4" .357 SuperMag will be a real handful (no pun intended) to shoot, and ammunition is challenging to find. You can shoot .357 Magnum in that gun as well.

Forget buying ammo. Spend the money on reload gear and brass. Avoid bullets lighter than 158gr; 180gr and up is better. You are going to get a huge fireball with the 4" barrel no matter which powder you use. Trail Boss and the old Lyman #358429 173gr SWC makes for a good target load.
