I am reading a book called Pepperdogs, a recon unit in serbia retrieving a lost comrade. One of the unit carries an over and under rifle with a 20mm lower barrel. Does such a weapon exist? How can you manage the recoil of something 7X teh weight of 50BMG?

I think the OICW program tinkered with a 20mm round, though it was not the 20mm canon round most people think of. It was cut down to reduce the recoil... though the program went effectively nowhere.

While I can't hope to know for sure, I think he might mean the 40 (not 20) mm grenade launcher that fits underneath the M16.

They were toying with a similar computer fused 20mm grenade launcher on the FS2000 too. Both programs went into the scrap heap, with HKs being referred to most politely as "Boondoggle".

Supposedly you could laser range the target and the gun would set it's own fuse, causing the grenade to blow up over or at the target.

If you look at the weapon, it's one of those "Oh, no shinola that won't work" kind of deals. It's a G36 core with the bulkiest package of crap on it I'd seen in a while. It looks like something you'd see in anime cartoons or a Quentin Tarrentino movie. Just bad, bad, bad.
