Need load data for the following using Hodgdon HS-6:

berry's doublestrike Plated RN 180gr. "can't find any darn load data for "plated bullets" or lead

Speer Gold Dot Hollowpoint 165gr.

Hornady TMJ 180gr FN.

just need some good Start/Stop rates. my reloading books are a little outdated, and don't have anything on 180 plated I know alot will chime in with the old' go out and buy new books but I'd love to buy alot of things and only have so much money for toys and supplies every month :banghead:

Using Rainier 165gr flat points, I get 867 fps with 6.8 grains of HS-6, and 905 fps with 7.0 grains. This is out of an H&K USP Compact, 3.5 inch barrel. HS-6 works great in the .40 S&W, but you won't find any load data specifically for plated bullets. All the manufacturers of plated bullets just recommend using the load data for cast lead bullets.

Maybe some help from the Lyman Pistol & Revolver III. The bullets are exactly opposite from what you have. The 165 is a SPEER TMJ and the 180 is a SIERRA JHP.

165 TMJ HS-6 7.6 grs 833 FPS 17,400 CUP Max: 8.5 grs 979 FPS 22,600 CUP.

180 JHP HS-6 6.9 grs 860 FPS 19,600 CUP Max: 8.0 grs 1048 FPS 23,500 CUP

The start data for the 180 gr. JHP is low enough to use for the plated bullet IMO as the load data for the #401638 175 gr. is: 7.0 - 8.4 grains.;)

okay updated with info for anyone else with a similar load dilema. after searching the web and talking to the dif manufacturers etc.etc.

for plated 180gr. .40s&w's use 6.4-6.9 of HS-6 with a max load of 7.4 "i found the 7.4 to be a little too snappy" 6.8 works great for me,cylces great in p229 and p226 and with no signs up over pressure or flat primers. I didn't run into any of those problems until I hit around 7.6

currently running 6.8 HS-6 under Berry's 180gr RNFP double-strike. such load can probably be used with similar Lead cast, or various other profile plated solid tip .180's "hollowpoints might be differant

I have been loading for a very long time, but within the last 6 years I have converted over to plated bullets. Our indoor range stopped allowing lead because they said it was very hard and expensive on the air filters. So it was either go to no lead or raise the price to replace the filters more often. So within the last 6 years I have been using berry's 180gr plated bullet in 40S&W.

The manuals I have and used in developing loads for testing are
Hornady #3, #7, #8 ---- #3 is so old it does not have 40S&W load data
Hodgdon paperback 2008,2009,2010,2011
lyman 48
lyman 49
Sierra edition 5
Speer 11, 12, 14 for some reason the 40 S&W loads here are HOT, probably has to do with their components and ensuring proper bullet expansion as well as their testing equipment. These loads start out where Hornady and Sierra max's out.

I have found for 40S&W Hornady and Sierra seems to have the best loads.

Hornady for 180gr and HS6 is 6.2-7.2gr
Sierra Edition 5 for 180gr and HS6 is 6.2-7.6

I have found for 180gr Berry 40S&W and HS6 6.6-6.8 seems to be the ideal load. HS6 is slower burning than the likes of W231 which I was using before, it is less snappy and shoots to point of aim out to 25 yards in my 40S&W platforms. Anything lower than 6.6gr of HS6 shoots soft but leaves a lot of unburnt powder behind. Over 6.8gr of HS6 shoots very well and accurate but the snappy recoil the 40S&W is known for starts to return. Though I only carry factory ammo for self defense I keep 50 rounds of reloads around where I try to replicate factory ammo just in case.

Federal Hydro Shock JHP says it produces 1000fps
7.1gr of HS6 seems to replicate this load over the chrono producing 1000 fps with berry's 180gr hollow point.

So Southersorrow and I have come to the same conclusion, 6.6-6.8 is the bulk of my reloads and what goes with me to the range.
This load will cycle my Beretta 90-two, Sig 226 and Glock 22 with Lone Wolf Barrel.

40S&W is known for blowing up weapons and causing injuries so safety should be your primary concern when reloading it. Please do not read any of this ammo and run off to your reloading bench to start reloading. Crack open a reputable reloading manual and check the loads then start at the very lowest point your reloading manual dictates.
