using a rem. 405 gr. JSP in my 22 " bbl NEF handi rifle and to obtain 1500 fps, what 1st hand load suggestions do you have using IMR 4198 or H 4895 ? do you use a filler with 4198 for loads in this range?..thanks much

The reason you are probably not getting a lot of responses is that people might not be familiar with that rifle. I am not myself, and it is a major consideration when you handload that calibre.

I own a stainless Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 with a muzzle break. I can find upper end loads that come mighty close to the lower end of a .458, a calibre most used in Africa.

A load of that type is not suitable for a trapdoor. In fact, my guess is that it is NOT a load for the Winchester.

If in doubt, I would suggest contacting the customer service department of that company. I'm sure you'll initially get the typical "we recommend clean factory loads of good quality," but if you convince them you are not a nut or a hot-rodder, I'm sure someone there with grease under his nails can get you some reality based info. Good luck.

the sb 2 handi rifles are in the level 2 ( marlin, etc) division as far as strength goes. it will handle 405's at 1800 fps safely, but i do not need nor do i see the practical use of such loadings. 1500 fps is a plenty

I tested loads fro my 45-70 with 4198 & 4895 and they were not as accurate as Hercules 2400.
This load is safe in my rifle although the bullet is the 350gr Lyman:

23gr. of 2400 powder, with 8gr poly fiber fill (PFF) holding the powder in place. ( I loaded some with the 405gr and it shot OK but didn't feed in my old lever gun, but at 50 yards it shot into 5/16", for 3 bullets!)
I get 1.5" groups at 100 yards with a clean barrel, and 1500fps. With PFF the velocity variation is 20fps. Without it it's over 100fps, and not accurate.

XMP-5744 hasn't worked for me. To much unburned powder and not accurate. I believe it would work better with the heavier 405gr bullet.

I am looking to replace this load, because I don't trust the PFF. I think if this ammo was carried where vibration ( like a car trunk or whatever) the powder might sift into the PFF. I'm going to test some with grits filler over the powder .

45/70 loads

Having sold several hundred California Saeco 4 cavity 45/70 bullet molds I advised my customers that they could use up to 54 grains of 3031 to take any North American animal with a 400 gr bullet and they responded back to me in their competition that the most accurate match winning load was 48 grains.
