I've got a set of 6 wood-handled steak knives that were given to my wife and I as a wedding present over 35 years ago. They need new wood. Personally, I would just throw them away and buy a new set, but my wife loves these knives. So, I thought that I would try and find someone who could make new wood handles for them. The handles are held on with 3 rivets with wood on each side. If someone is interested in tackling this project, I'll take some pics and email them to you. I'm located in Novato, CA and am willing to travel almost anywhere in the SFBayArea, or could ship them. Thanks for reading this. And yes, they do go in the dishwasher. I know that wood and dishwashers don't mix, but these survived 35 years of dishwasher use.

Yea, it's really not worth it unless those are some expensive knives. If you do find someone to do it you might think about something other than wood for handles.

Furthermore, good sharp kitchen knives and dishwashers don't mix.

Stop That if you want sharp kitchen knives without the handles ruined.

Like bikerdoc said why don't you give it a try yourself.Buying the scales and the Corby rivets would be less than $10 a knife if you have or use other wood less than that.

I'm not adverse at all to attempting it myself. Can anyone point me to where to purchase scales and rivets?

Google 'knifemaking supplies' and you'll be busy for hours. Any hand tools at all (coping saw and sandpaper, at a minimum) and you can do that-

Get stabilized wood and they'll be more likely to stay in shape for the years ya'll have left.

Thanks for all the help guys, especially for the links! I've got some work to do now. You can close this thread now.

It seems that you want someone else to do it, but if you ever feel like doing a little DIY project, get some deer antlers and make your own deer antler handles. I did that to a bunch of our knives. They look pretty nice, or at least until they got lost over time :banghead:

Leatherneck1969,
Novato s beautiful this time of year. You are in the middle of some of the finest orchards and vineyards in America. With the current drought growers are going to be downsizing their trees and vines. Look for grape root from loamy, not sandy soil. The grape roots can pick up sand and ruin a saw blade. Look for some one replacing english walnut trees, the base they are grafted on is almost invariably black walnut. Check out upscale flooring stores for cull lumber. Last of all go to craft shows and look for some one with a good band saw to resaw scales to the size you want. For the price of an extra blade they will probably do all the resawing you want. After that it is just a coping saw, sandpaper, polish and reattach. I live 5000' up in the middle of Az now with more exMarines per sq ft' than anywhere I have ever seen with the exception of Pendelton. If the gun laws had remained the same I would still live in Ca over in the Delta country near Ro Vista.
C'est la vie,

blindhari
