I carry a Kahr pm 45 it is light thin small and very dependable, have been carrying it for about 5 years BUT the other day i traded for an XDs,i sold it but i really liked it,never did shoot it.If i didn't have the Kahr i would have kept it,i especially like the grip safety It was almost the same size as the pm 45 but about 1/2 inch longer. The more i think about it i may start looking for one in the bi-tone.If i was looking for a small carry gun in .45 acp it would be on the top of the list.

An update...I thought I had a M&P Shield from one of the stores. Didn't work out. So with the suggestions of some of the members here, I put my name on the waiting list at several shops. Last week I got a call that one had gotten thirty Shields in. I got my .40 ca Shield .

To say it's awesome would be an understatement. For such a small pistol in .40 the recoil is quite mild. It's got some kind of double recoil spring that takes out the snap. It's thin enough to easily carry IWB.

Best thing is the accuracy. My S-I-L is an OK pistol shot. He shot the first three out of the pipe at golf balls maybe twenty feet away. Three hits. The safety makes re-holstering a much more comforting experience for me.

Thanks for the advice.

FWIW...if you're in NW Indiana, Blythe's in Valparaiso has about 10 in 9mm and maybe 5 left in .40

I've gone into a number of local shops. Every time my head starts to hurt looking at all the choices. Need help.

My person criteria...caliber in preferred order (1) .357 Sig, (2) 10 mm (3) 40 S&W, (4) 45 acp. Stopping power is obviously very high on the list.

Capacity is irrelevant. I'm not gonna get into a long extended shoot out. Paper plate at seven feet is good enough accuracy. In that vein, it doesn't need to have 17 round capacity. Six is plenty.

Gotta be thin and light. No matter what it is, it's still too big and too heavy. Minimize size and weight. Also, I strongly prefer manual safety. I've been using one for over fifty years. I can handle flipping a safety switch, though I guess it's not an absolute necessity if it has a decocker.

Quality. Price is far less an issue than quality. Looking at Sigs, H&K, Walther, etc. I have a G20 for a house gun. The Glocks I have held are fat, bulky and don't have a safety. If G29's had a safety, I might consider one but there's gotta be something smaller.

What is your body type? Where and how do you plan upon carrying it? What belt and holster do plan upon using? Does your wardrobe support larger guns? Do you need to pocket carry?

I generally find that four guns cover all situations.

1) Very small such as a Keltec P32, Beretta Nano, SIG P238, etc

2) Small such as the Springfield XDS, SIG P230 or Walther PPQ

3) Compact such as the Kahr PM45, Glock 26

4) Mid size such as Glock 19, SIG P229, S&W K-Frame

You already have a full size gun in a great caliber.

What about going with a Springfield XDS in 45 ACP once they complete the recall? You could also try one of the S&W M&P compacts.

Input appreciated. TIA
You need a kimber compact 1911. Fits your requirements to a tee.

They have an incredibly diverse selection of compact and subcompact pistols in various comgifurations.

And its a .45. Forget your other suggestions. Hype, limited supply compared to 45. Expensive, and negligable magazine capacity increase in a single stack, which i assume youll end up choosing considering your given prefrences in your first post.

That 45 slug wont shrink.

H&K USP Compact
In .40 or .45 should do the trick for you. Your call on just capacity and power here- the platform is without compromise on reliability and safety.

What I posted was an update from earlier in the year. Might want to read my post #29...
