I've been looking and looking to find an inexpensive case or bag that will work for my new 870 Police. It is 39.5" overall, and has a side-saddle (so is pretty wide).

I was originally thinking of a hard case (such as a Plano) but wasn't able to find one that was thick enough for the side-saddle. So I am now open to the idea of a soft bag as well.

Anyone know of any good products out there? I really need this because I live in a very urban area and can't take the gun to my car without causing a scene. I brought it up to my house at midnight wrapped in my leather jacket, now can't get it out of the house :scrutiny:

Some folks have recommended a guitar case or maybe golf bag? Is that legal? If it is, I think a guitar case would be nice -- I could add foam to it for padding and then no one would even question what was in the case. Probably less likely to get stolen if my house were broken into .....

A nondescript case is better IMHO than one that might attract unwanted attention- people steal guitars too.

Think about a case that doesn't shout GUN! or anything else of interest. If you don't mind the shotgun being taken down for transport, a simple Ace case for takedown shotguns might work for you. See http://acecase.com/breakdown-shotgun-case-nylon.html for one example. About $30, there's an Ace dealer at just about every local gun show here.

I just went through their online catalog and like this one http://acecase.com/shotgun-case-with-pocket-nylon.html

Seems like the smallest size (39") might work, or possibly the next size up (42").

Thank you God for Texas
you have no idea what would happen if someone spotted me transporting my gun to my car trunk - the cops would be on me in under 2 minutes. Even up in NH over the weekend when I was loading it into the boat (a 10' jaunt) I got some extremely alarmed and upset folks.

I use a baseball bag, it accomodates my 36.5" 18.5 barrelled 870 with 12" LOP Hogue stock with a bit of length to spare and has both a shoulder sling and wheels so you can haul it around either way.

However I'm probably going to switch to a tennis racket bag in the near future, which is a lot less bully although I'll have to take the gun down or fit up a folding stock.

I have ended up with a fairly inexpensive black plastic hard case lined with egg crate foam that I got at Bass Pro Shop for maybe $15. I have to take the barrel off for it to fit but it is much more convenient than carrying the shotgun around in a long soft case. The foam keeps the two parts separate and in place. I also don't have to worry so much about bumping it or piling other stuff on it for transport. The plastic won't get scuffed up and if it did I wouldn't care. I normally use a 30" barrel for skeet and trap and the whole thing, in a long soft case, is too long to fit in some cars/trunks without laying at an angle. The plastic hard case is 35" x 10" x 3 1/2". The name on it is Pro Max, Model #1535. But I don't think there is anything super special about it and there are likely other similar models. The hard case is also more normal to carry into an airport than a long cammo obvious gun case.

Lacrosse stick bag

Guitar case, preferably used with lots of stickers on it

Yes, they are legal, but you need to observe any local/state safe storage/safe transport laws.

Get a lightly-used Golf Bag w/ hood.

Inexpensive, works like a charm and holds a bunch. ;)
